The Position
JOB SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator I performs a variety of maintenance, manual labor, and construction tasks. Duties include maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, drainage ways, rights of way, and various other outdoor areas. The Equipment Operator I operates various types of light equipment, including but not limited to chainsaws, mowers, tree trimmers, stump grinders, pavement marking machines, walk-behind compactors, and various small hand tools and power tools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate tools and machinery, including but not limited to pneumatic and electric jack hammers, mechanical and manual saws, mechanical and manual hammers, hammer drills, sledgehammers, pick-axe, Maddox, digging bars, mowers, string trimmers, and other hand-held power tools, including other rotating and vibrating power tools.
- Load, transport, and unload light equipment and materials for assigned projects.
- Check oil, water, fuel, and tires, and perform other routine inspections to ensure equipment and vehicles are in proper working condition.
- Grade, maintain, patch, seal cracks, resurface streets, and repair potholes.
- Level streets and other areas; dig and maintain drainage ditches and culverts; tamp, pack, and level dirt, asphalt, or other material.
- Assist with sanding and de-icing sidewalks during inclement weather conditions.
- Assist with the set up and take down of road work traffic control zones; set up barricades at work sites to warn traffic of hazardous areas.
- Perform routine inspections and repairs of guardrails as needed.
- Prune, cut, mow, and/or trim vegetation, including grasses, shrubs and trees.
- Cut, collect, and dispose of tree limbs, trash, and general debris found along streets, roads, drainage system, and other city facilities.
- Install, maintain, and repair street signs and pavement markings.
- Clean and restore storm water facilities and systems.
- Perform weed and brush control along drainage ways and storm water facilities.
- Enter completed work orders into computer system.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
- Follow safety policies and all departmental and City policies, and exercise proper usage of equipment, safety devices, and vehicles.
- Escalates customer complaints to a Foreman, Public Works Operations Manager, or Assistant Director.
- This role is a City safety sensitive or DOT role that will require random drug screening.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or its equivalent
- One (1) to Two (2) years of general maintenance experience
- OR any approved equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
- Valid Texas Driver's License with acceptable driving record
- International Municipal Signals Association (IMSA), Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), or approved equivalent Work Zone/Flagger certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire

- Safe operation of the light equipment used and of the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code related to the operation of light motorized equipment;
- Basic methods, practices, material, and equipment used in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, stormwater facilities, and related facilities

- Applicable laws, regulations, ordinance, and activities of the Public Works Department
Skill/Ability to:
- Load, transport, and unload necessary light equipment and materials for assigned projects.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and light motorized equipment effectively and safely.
- Service and make minor repairs on equipment, applying safety standards to prevent hazards.
- Understand and follow instructions.
- Use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems and computers for data entry.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
WORK CONDITIONS
Physical Demand
- This position must be able to be scheduled for on-call rotation to respond to emergencies and after-hour repair needs.
- As an essential employee, this position is subject to regular work hours, after-hours callouts, and scheduled overtime during special events and emergencies, which can include inclement weather, flooding, Police and Fire department assistance, and other planned or unforeseen circumstances, including such events that occur during or outside of the on-call rotation.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and push or pull up to 100 lbs.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, or sit (often for extended periods of time); use hands; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, squat, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell.

- Work is performed in indoor and outdoor conditions, including work performed in adverse weather conditions and in non-climate-controlled environments.
- May work in environments where exposure to industrial chemicals is routine; responsible for safely handling, transporting, and operating equipment in accordance with hazardous materials protocols and company safety standards.
- Work is conducted in safety-sensitive settings, including live traffic conditions, requiring constant situational awareness.
