The work you will do:

  • Operate various vehicles and heavy equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance and assist with repairs and cleaning
  • Lead and coordinate the work of a maintenance crew
  • Perform manual labor, temporary traffic control, basic carpentry, masonry, painting, and help install highway signs
  • Train crew members in equipment operation and traffic control procedures

Annual Salary Range: $38,593.58 - $49,944.63 A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 will be added to the annual salary.

Your specific responsibilities:

  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment
  • Cleans and washes equipment
  • Operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance
  • Oversees crews performing maintenance activities
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision
  • Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic)
  • Assists with crew activity reports as needed

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations standard safety rules and procedures
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions develop and maintain effective working relationships with others lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis work outdoors in various weather conditions on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic work independently stand for an extended period of time

Other job-related requirements:

  • Possess a valid Class "E" driver's license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position
  • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions
  • Obtains certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintains

Minimum qualifications:

  • Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles
  • A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months of appointment.
