The City of Vacaville is accepting applications for the Equipment Mechanic position in our Public Works Fleet Maintenance Division. Currently, one (1) vacancy exists for this position. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list for future vacancies in this classification that may occur over the next 12-month period.

Salary and Benefits Information

$85,174 - $103,529 Annually

A 2% COLA is scheduled for 11/1/2026

This position is eligible for certification pay:

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician I = $2,560/year ($98.46 per pay period)
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician II = $3,070/year ($118.07 per pay period)
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician III = $5,120/year ($196.92 per pay period)

As an Equipment Mechanic with the City of Vacaville, you will help keep the Citys diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment safe, reliable and ready to support essential public services. This hands-on position offers the opportunity to work on everything from passenger vehicles and public safety units to heavy construction equipment while applying your mechanical expertise to solve complex problems. Additional duties include:

  • Perform preventive maintenance to maximize the safety, reliability and performance of the Citys fleet.
  • Respond to emergency vehicle and equipment breakdowns by performing timely field repairs.
  • Fabricate, modify and repair parts using drilling, cutting and welding equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including charging, ignition and high-output electrical components.
  • Inspect, diagnose, rebuild and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, hoses, cylinders and valves.
  • Prepare and maintain public safety vehicles and equipment to support police, fire and other essential City operations.
  • Use computerized diagnostic equipment and specialized tools to identify mechanical issues and optimize vehicle performance.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional automotive/equipment maintenance classes are desirable.

Experience: Two years of work experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other power-driven equipment. Previous experience maintaining transit or school buses and/or heavy construction equipment is desirable. Completion of a specialized course of study or apprentice program can be substituted for one year of experience.

License or Certificate: Possession of the National Institute for Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) test for T(4) Brakes, and T(8) Preventative Maintenance Inspections and EPA Type II Certificate for handling refrigerants are desirable at the time of hire and are conditions of passing probation and of continued employment.

A Class B License with passenger endorsement is required prior to completion of probation and is a condition of continued employment.

Information for Part-Time Positions:

Part-time positions are paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month. Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits (including CalPERS membership), and do not accrue leave time with the exception of state mandated sick leave (40 hours per year).

Part-time positions are not covered by Social Security and are not eligible for the City of Vacavilles retirement plan through CalPERS and are therefore required to make 7.5% pre-tax contributions into a qualified plan under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1990 (OBRA). For the City of Vacaville, the plan is a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan through Nationwide Retirement Systems, Inc.
