Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Equipment Engineer to contribute to the design, development, modification, and scale-up of new/existing automation equipment lines in our Assembly process for our advanced cell manufacturing equipment for our cutting-edge Tesla battery cells. The battery cell is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a world-class manufacturing facility right here in the Bay Area.

Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of incredibly exciting products. The Equipment Engineer will also work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire lifecycle of the product and processes. They will work closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Process teams to fix production equipment issues and support NPI teams to bring the new product from initial design through prototype development and finally into full production.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering support to the production and maintenance teams when needed.
  • Validation and characterization of new/current equipment and fixtures for introduction to the production floor.
  • Lead safety and ergonomic improvements to production equipment which meets or exceeds regulations and best practices.
  • Collaborate with external equipment suppliers on equipment design and improvement.
  • Work with controls engineers to troubleshoot and recover processes by PLC, HMI, or tool management software and implement changes/improvements.
  • Create detailed manufacturing instructions to define new processes and document new equipment operation and train technicians and operators on these processes.
  • Develop preventive maintenance procedures and a comprehensive spare list to maximize OEE of equipment.
  • Debug and optimize automated processes to maximize cycle time and specify hand tools for manual assembly tasks.
  • Manage continuous improvement projects to drive equipment improvements based on PFMEA/DFMEA risk assessment.
  • Create machine interactions within a plant-wide Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

Requirements:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 3 years of experience as a hands-on mechanical/manufacturing engineer working on automation and/or solving electromechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience ramping equipment into manufacturing - automation equipment, laser welding, fluid dispensing, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs, TwinCAT.
  • Preferred: motion controls and data capture.
  • Proficiency designing mechanical equipment fixtures and tooling in CAD (SolidWorks, Catia is a plus).
  • Demonstrated experience in reading layouts, tooling drawings, and pneumatic and electrical schematics.
  • Preferred experience with vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, etc.).
  • Preferred basic knowledge of laser welding process.
  • Willing to work occasionally on weekends to support production when needed.

Expected Compensation: $84,000 - $156,000 annual salary, cash, and stock awards, benefits.

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
