EPIDEMIOLOGIST

DIVISION OF PUBLIC HEALTH

CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Epidemiologist for the Public Health Division within the Office of Health and Human Services (HHS). The Epidemiologist will strengthen the data, research, and epidemiology capacity of the Worcester Division of Public Health. This position will support program success by assessing workplan design, implementation, and outcomes, and by working collaboratively with program staff to identify process improvements. The Epidemiologist will respond to community partner requests for data and will coordinate data and research needs across other Division offices. In support of the Division's Health Equity mission, the Epidemiologist will apply a lens of racial and economic justice to all work by identifying and clearly communicating inequities and providing actionable data to decision-makers. The role will work primarily with secondary quantitative data and will also coordinate primary data collection efforts through public and focused surveys. The Epidemiologist will also integrate qualitative data as part of ongoing community health assessment work. This position reports to the Director of Public Health and works closely with Division staff, community partners, and other City departments.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Evaluate programs including design, implementation and monitoring outcomes
  • Facilitate ongoing community health assessment processes in Worcester
  • Advise programmatic improvement efforts for Division, Department, and partner organization programs
  • Build and sustain partnerships with area academic institutions
  • Identify opportunities for expanded research and epidemiology capacity within the Division
  • Routinely update internal and external dashboards to keep the division and partners informed of program progress
  • Participate in local coalitions and work groups to align collaborative data and research efforts
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data and produce written findings with an emphasis on equity
  • Present findings of research and program evaluation to Board of Health, community partners and other stakeholders
  • Identify training and professional development opportunities to maintain personal and staff expertise in the essential Public Health area of epidemiology
  • Assist in writing grant applications
  • Other duties as assigned

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of public health principles, epidemiologic methods, and disease surveillance systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Excellent attention to detail required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse, multicultural community, organizations, and staff
  • Ability to conceptualize and organize projects into manageable tasks
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to compile detailed quantitative data reports
  • Ability to prepare written reports understandable by the public
  • Ability to support administrative activities to include financial and information technology
  • Knowledge of program/project lifecycle stages: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, evaluation and closing
  • Skilled in strategic planning and program design to align with department and City goals
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with community based and/or public health organizations
  • Regular onsite attendance required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's degree in public health, nursing, community health or a related health field with a focus on epidemiology or data science
  • Two (2) years of experience in epidemiology or public health research
  • Experience analyzing data using SAS, STATA, or geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Experience with manipulating, reporting on, and visualizing quantitative data.
  • Familiarity with health equity and anti-racism frameworks
  • Familiarity with the social determinants of health and the life-course perspective
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience developing and maintaining professional working relationships with community- based organizations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Five (5) years of experience in epidemiology or public health research
  • Demonstrated expertise with health equity and anti-racism frameworks
  • Five (5) years of experience developing and maintaining professional working relationships with community-based and/or public health organizations
  • Experience with evaluating state and/or federal grant projects
  • Experience analyzing quantitative data using NVIVO or other comparable software

SALARY RANGE: $62,843 - $82,337 annually, full-time, exempt with an excellent benefits package.
