The Educational Opportunity Programs Student Support Services (SSS) Summer Program seeks engaged and motivated graduate students to serve as Seminar Leaders supporting incoming Marquette University freshmen enrolled in accredited summer courses. Seminar Leaders play a key role in helping students make a successful transition to college-level learning by reinforcing academic content while intentionally building study skills transitional skills academic confidence and classroom readiness. As a federally funded TRIO program Student Support Services is designed to support first-generation and low-income students. Seminar Leaders are essential partners in helping students navigate expectations develop effective learning habits and successfully complete their summer coursework.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Mandatory training and orientation will take place during the week of June 22
  • Training will focus on:
  • Understanding the EOPSSS mission and TRIO framework
  • Supporting first-generation college students
  • Applying high-impact educational practices
  • Effective seminar facilitation and academic coaching strategies
  • Creating engaging inclusive and supportive learning environments

Potential Course Areas

  • Openings may be available in the following subject areas:
  • History 1002 - Western Civilization from 1725
  • Biology 1009 - Biology for Non-Science Majors
  • Sociology 1001
  • Theology 1001
  • Math 1700 - Statistics

Key Responsibilities

  • Seminar Leaders will:
  • Support incoming freshmen enrolled in accredited summer courses by reinforcing course content and academic expectations
  • Assist students in developing college-level study skills including time management note-taking test preparation critical reading and active learning strategies
  • Attend and observe the corresponding university course to stay aligned with instructional goals and course pacing
  • Design and facilitate interactive academic seminars connected to course material
  • Hold regular office hours to provide individualized academic support
  • Lead small-group tutorials and collaborative learning sessions as needed
  • Utilize high-impact practices e.g. active learning peer discussion reflection applied problem-solving to enhance student learning
  • Create engaging creative and inclusive learning experiences that encourage participation and confidence
  • Support the unique needs of first-generation students including navigating college expectations academic norms and help-seeking behaviors
  • Collaborate with EOPSSS staff to monitor progress and promote successful course completion

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelors degree or be pursuing an undergraduate degree and experience working with students in your respective discipline
  • Related experience with students or community groups that address issues affecting low-income and minority populations
  • Ability to teach in a virtual in-person and/or hybrid mode

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Current graduate student at Marquette University or a related institution
  • Strong academic background in one or more of the listed subject areas
  • Familiarity with high-impact practices and student-centered teaching approaches
  • Experience working with first-generation and/or underrepresented students
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and adapt instruction to diverse learning styles
  • Creative engaging and relational teaching style
  • Commitment to the mission of EOP-Student Support Services and educational access
