This position operates commercial vehicles such as roll-off trucks for the collection, transport, and disposal of solid waste, and recyclables.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Operates a roll-off truck; picks up trash/recycle containers at assigned locations, delivers filled trash containers to transfer station/landfill; delivers recycling containers to recycling facility/vendors or other designated location; delivers empty containers to disposal/recycle sites.
- Operates box trucks and pick-up trucks for collection and transport of solid waste and recyclables.
- Performs Pre and Post Trip inspections of assigned vehicle and equipment. Check equipment for damage or other problems at the end of each day. Report any problems to supervisor.
- Operates forklifts, clamp trucks, hand trucks, compactors and balers.
- Washes and greases vehicle; keeps vehicle clean and maintained at all times.
- Cleans and maintains grounds at disposal and recycling sites and locations.
- Assist in overseeing and working with assigned County inmates.
- Takes the shortest and safest routes possible in transportation operations, obeying all traffic laws and monitoring other traffic, practices defensive driving techniques.
- Maintains an awareness of all activity around assigned equipment and practices defensive driving when in pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
- Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLESGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of equipment operation guidelines.
- Knowledge of county and department regulations, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair guidelines.
- Knowledge of county geography, roads and disposal site locations.
- Knowledge of traffic hazards, safety principles, rules, regulations and speed limits.
- Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to comprehend and follow safety rules and regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Some High School education and one (1) year of related experience.
- Possession of a valid Commercial, Class A or B State issued driver's license.
