Job Description

The Staff Scientist (Environmental Project Scientist) supports environmental due diligence and site assessment work that helps clients make informed, responsible decisions. In this role, you’ll perform field investigations, support reporting, and work closely with experienced project managers on Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.

This position is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on fieldwork, values accurate documentation, and wants to grow their career in environmental consulting while contributing to work that protects communities and the environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Perform and/or oversee Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), including site visits, historical research, and technical report preparation.
  • Support and execute Phase II ESAs, including field data collection (soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling), logging soil borings and monitoring wells, and preparing field documentation and reports.
  • Conduct stormwater sampling in compliance with NPDES requirements, and limited asbestos sampling, including fieldwork and reporting.
  • Provide technical, administrative, and billable project support to Project Managers and Client Managers as requested.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams to support project execution, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of and compliance with Atlas policies and procedures, with a strong emphasis on safety protocols.

You’ll Thrive Here If You Have

  • A degree in Geology, Engineering, or Environmental Sciences.
  • 6+ years of experience performing Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), including site visits, field activities, and technical report writing.
  • A valid U.S. Driver’s License.
  • The ability to perform field work under limited supervision and in full compliance with Atlas and client safety protocols.
  • Proven ability to manage time, prioritize multiple projects, and meet deliverable deadlines and project budgets with minimal supervision.
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with a current refresher (preferred).
  • AHERA Building Inspector Asbestos Certification (preferred).
  • Strong working knowledge of environmental regulations and due diligence processes, including ASTM E1527, with familiarity in Virginia, Maryland, and surrounding state regulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other commonly used software; working knowledge of the Quire platform is a plus.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project and client management experience within an environmental consulting environment.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%, primarily within Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and surrounding states.
  • Interest in pursuing or maintaining relevant professional registrations or certifications.
  • Prior environmental consulting experience required.
