The Environmental Compliance Project Manager plans, coordinates, and executes environmental compliance initiatives across real estate, construction, and operations. This role supports acquisitions, divestitures, remodels, and remediation efforts, delivering timely, business‑focused solutions that meet federal, state, and local requirements.

Main responsibilities

Real Estate Due Diligence

  • Lead environmental due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures, including Phase I ESAs, Phase II investigations, and regulatory file reviews.
  • Synthesize consultant findings, quantify environmental risks, and present actionable recommendations to Real Estate, Legal, and transaction teams.
  • Develop and manage scopes, budgets, and schedules; ensure on‑time deliverables that align with deal milestones.

Asbestos & Hazardous Building Materials Compliance

  • Manage asbestos, lead-based paint, and other hazardous building material surveys for grocery store remodels, expansions, and renovations.
  • Provide technical guidance on abatement requirements, survey interpretation, and regulatory obligations to Construction and Facilities teams.
  • Oversee third‑party consultants to ensure compliance with NESHAP and applicable state/local requirements and company standards.

Environmental Investigations & Remediation

  • Oversee soil and groundwater investigations, corrective action plans, and remediation activities at active and legacy sites.
  • Coordinate with state and federal agencies on permitting, reporting, and regulatory closure pathways.
  • Track remediation performance, manage consultant deliverables, and maintain adherence to budgets and risk-reduction objectives.

Program & Compliance Management

  • Maintain accurate documentation, budgets, schedules, and internal reporting across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Act as a subject‑matter expert to Construction, Real Estate, Legal, Risk, and Operations; translate technical topics into business guidance.
  • Support corporate environmental compliance programs and continuous improvement initiatives, reinforcing brand and safety standards.

We are looking for candidates who possess the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Engineering, Geology, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
  • 5 plus years of experience in environmental compliance, site investigations, due diligence, or related project management roles.
  • Working knowledge of CERCLA, RCRA, Clean Air Act (including asbestos NESHAP), and relevant state programs.
  • Proven ability to manage consultants, control budgets, and drive results across multi‑site portfolios and diverse jurisdictions.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts for cross‑functional partners and leadership.
  • Ability to travel for project oversight, site visits, and stakeholder meetings as needed.
