Position Summary

Internal Posting

This position is posted in compliance with Alabama Code §16-22-15.

It is the intent to place a current employee in this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recommends required textbook/course material to the Division Chair for use in each course.
  • Recommends hiring of all adjunct instructors for the department to the Division Chair.
  • Reports promptly absences (arranges for instructor replacement and class coverage), grievances, and other personnel matters to the Division Chair.
  • Initiates purchase of materials, supplies, and equipment so that expenditures are within budget.
  • Conducts routine department meetings and files minutes with the Division Chair. Maintains records and reports of department meetings, activities, personnel, and assets.
  • Coordinates course offerings with the Division Chair.
  • Performs evaluations of instructors, as requested by the Division Chair.
  • Recommends and plans professional development activities for faculty in the department a needed.
  • Continues professional development through organizations or activities to make the department head more effective and better informed.
  • Attends the Academic Council as needed.
  • Coordinates, reviews, and revises general and specific course syllabi. Maintains syllabi file for all courses taught in department.
  • Prepare and files reports, memorandums, and documents by the expected due dates.
  • Leads the department in completing tasks described for the department in the Institutional Effectiveness Plan. This will include implementation of procedures: (1) for developing departmental goals and outcomes; (2) for evaluating the extent to which all goals and outcomes are being achieved, this includes educational goals and outcomes; and (3) for using the results of these evaluations to improve divisional effectiveness.
  • Leads the department in recruitment efforts for the department.
  • Participates fully in committee assignments.
  • Coordinates program advisory committee meetings for department, as appropriate.
  • Initiates and coordinates instructional program reviews.
  • Recommends catalog revisions.
  • Coordinates challenge exams in specific courses and grade appeals.
  • Participates in inventories of all program equipment.
  • Advises students and prepares program completion and graduation forms for programs taught by adjunct instructors.
  • Promotes professionalism and teamwork among members of the department and among other College employees.

Qualifications

  • Current faculty member at Northwest Shoals Community College, required.
  • Minimum of a Masters Degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in English, required.

SALARY: Compensation is in accordance with the Alabama Community College System's Salary Schedule D1 Stipend ($200 per month).
