SFO is committed to being a diverse, equitable, and inclusive employer and is recognized as a leader in environmental sustainability, equity, and forward‑thinking infrastructure.The mission is to deliver an airport experience where people and the planet come first.This position is a journey‑level Stationary Engineer who will operate and maintain a wide variety of complex machinery and equipment in a sewage treatment plant.Essential FunctionsMakes regular visual, audio, olfactory and tactile inspections and/or manual tests of all plant machinery and equipment, including auxiliary equipment, maintaining logs and records of required maintenance.Performs a variety of manual tasks requiring handling of equipment exposed to raw sewage; collects and performs simple assessments of raw sewage and chemical samples on a prescribed schedule at specific locations by making chemical and physical assessments to ensure compliance with the NPDES Permit.Operates, inspects, maintains, overhauls and makes major and minor repairs to a wide variety of pumping, heating, ventilating, process machinery and equipment, including pumps, grit collectors, conveyors, chlorinators, evaporators, storage tanks, sludge collectors, drive units, deodorizing equipment, metering devices to assure safety and efficiency.Inspects sewage pipelines, tanks and gates to check for infiltration and blockage of debris and build‑up of mineral deposits by draining tanks, monitoring pressure and flow indicators and visual inspection to determine problem areas.Operates, inspects and maintains solids treatment and flocculating chemical systems by monitoring and adjusting flow indicators or controllers, visual inspection and analysis of samples to ensure optimum treatment.Operates, inspects and maintains disinfection and dechlorination systems by performing tests and analyzing samples to determine proper chemical dosages to meet regional and state pollution control requirements.May assist in training and supervising apprentices or other trainees by oral instruction and hands‑on demonstration in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment processes.Perform duties as listed in the 7372 Stationary Engineer, Sewage Plant class specification.QualificationsFour (4) years of verifiable journey‑level Stationary Engineer, Plant Operator and/or Plant Mechanic experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical plant machinery of a wastewater treatment plant, government establishment, hospital, industrial, production, or commercial building; ORCompletion of a recognized four‑year Stationary Engineer Apprenticeship Program; ORGraduation from a recognized four‑year Maritime Academy with a degree in Engineering or Technology; ORPossession of at least a 3rd Assistant Marine Engineer's License of any unrestricted horsepower; ORPossession of an FAA Airframe or Power Plant Certificate and four (4) years of verifiable experience in an Airframe or Powerplant mechanic or maintenance technician capacity that utilizes the certificate.License and CertificationPossession of a valid driver's license; ANDGrade I or higher California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate, or Grade I or higher California Water Environment Mechanical Technology Certificate.Desirable QualificationsGrade II or higher California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.California Advanced Water Treatment Operator Certificate (AWTO).Experience working in a wastewater treatment plant.Availability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.Applicants may be required to submit verification documentation during the recruitment and selection process.
