The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position will perform engineering work in the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of submarine propulsion plant machinery. In particular, significant experience with shafting, ship service turbine generators, reduction gears, condensers, and their respective mounting systems is desired. Experience with Steam Plant Cleanliness requirements and SUBSAFE requirements is recommended.

Responsibilities of this position will include leading engineering task teams, assisting supervisor in daily functions, and acting as make-up supervisor as required. Effective oral and written communication skills are important. Technical submittals of design proposals, engineering calculations and analysis, drawing reviews, presentations, operating instructions, test procedures, maintenance procedures, etc. will be required. This position may require collaborative work with other internal/external design and/or test engineering personnel; including NAVSEA, Naval shipyards, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, vendors, etc. On-site resolution of problems encountered during construction or overhaul will be required, possibly resulting in some travel.

This position requires the ability to obtain and retain specific security clearances. May require the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites, including those aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, including the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc.

Must Have

Bachelors Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • A comprehensive understanding of submarine propulsion plant machinery.
  • Experience with in-service submarine work and construction.
  • Knowledge of the various Special Emphasis Programs is preferred.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously, and to prioritize work to meet schedule, cost, and quality objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
