Job Summary:


General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.


We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Magnetic Engineer, Motor Design, to join our GA-ASI division in San Diego, CA (Poway, CA). Under general directions with limited review, this position will design and analyze advanced electromagnetic/electromechanical components and equipment for unmanned air vehicles (UAVs).


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


+ Responsible for the design and development, documenting, testing, troubleshooting and implementation of DC motors for new and legacy designs.

+ Lead the complete life cycle of electric motor assemblies, including definition, analysis, design, development, manufacturing, assembly, verification, and ground and flight integration.

+ Create and/or work with vendors to optimize electromagnetic machines based on system and customer requirements.

+ Collaborate with various cross-functional teams, such as technicians, manufacturing, actuation, motor drive, motor controls, and system engineers.

+ Provide support for the following legacy electromagnetic machines and components: Brushed DC motors, Brushless DC motors, Generators, Alternators, Fail-Safe Brakes, Solenoids, Voice Coils, Resolvers, Encoders, and Hall and Proximity Sensors.

+ Responsible for documenting new designs, writing test plans, and processing engineering change notices as required.

+ Provide support for onboard aircraft integration, production, and field support tests as needed.

+ Responsible for all documentation necessary to support production (verification test plans and test reports, production test procedures, BOMs, CRs, CNs, and Source Control Drawings) as well as trade studies for new designs.

+ Determines technical objectives for solution(s) to advanced technical engineering problems.

Job Qualifications:


+ Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a masters degree, or two or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

+ 5+ years’ experience with motor design preferred.

+ Fundamental knowledge of different types of electromagnetic machines (brushless and brushed permanent magnet motors)

+ Experience with electric motor manufacturing processes such as stator windings, lamination stacking, stator varnishing, and various insulation classes.

+ Knowledge of magnetic machine design of DC motors.

+ Electromechanical experience with electric motors, including collaboration with suppliers to identify COTS components and custom modifications as needed.

+ Experience with FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell preferred.

+ Experience with 3D mechanical design is preferred.

+ Experience with modeling/controlling/driving motors is preferred.

+ Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment.

+ Able to work extended hours as required.

+ Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
