Job Title: Automation and Controls Engineer
Job Summary:
Provides technical leadership for the evaluation and implementation of automation and controls improvements to enhance the efficiency, quality, compliance, customer service, and safety of manufacturing operations. Evaluate existing process controls, suggest and evaluate controls improvements. Work closely with maintenance and engineering team, provide production support. Provide technical support to multiple large projects, including automation design, implementation, and validation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Provides technical expertise (SME) for assigned equipment and machine control systems. • Participates in and leads equipment troubleshooting and problem solving. • Completes independent analysis to identify and evaluate opportunities for process equipment, machine control, and network/server improvements and cost savings. • Uses creative approaches in solving complex problems. • Create and update P&IDs, wiring schematics and I/O drawings for the controls systems. • Provide project scope, design, FAT, SAT, start-up, commissioning, and supports validation for equipment and control systems. • Provide engineering, controls design and programming including development, modifying and troubleshooting of AC/DC Drives, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, Vision Systems and Robot Controllers. • Provide technical input to help develop long range replacement and shorter-range continuous improvement project and system lifecycle management plans.
Key Responsibilities:
• Works on problems of diverse scope and complexity where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. • Largely self-directed after work is assigned; solicits input from senior level engineers. • Maintain a state of cGMP Compliance in all. • May supervise others during project-specific activities. • Trains new employees on use of HMIs, equipment, system and equipment documentation, and department procedures. • May provide input on performance evaluations to area manager. • Delivers communications tailored to the needs of the receiver (managers, peers, customers) with appropriate frequency to maximize its utility and promote cross-functional collaboration. • Brings substantive conflicts and disagreements into the open and attempts to resolve them collaboratively; builds consensus.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a Class VIII Cleanroom, working on high-speed fully automated machines, professional office environment, and routinely uses standard office equipment with occasional work performed in a clean room environment. Must be able to occasionally move and lift objects of up to 25 pounds. Travel required 10% of the time depending on projects assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Education & Experience:
• Must be at least 18 years of age • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (Engineering, Technology, or STEM) • Minimum of 4 years of experience required • Preferred experience: controls or automation engineering, developing machine and process control systems, in one of pharmaceutical, food, or cosmetic industries
Knowledge & Skills:
• Programming skills: SME in Allen Bradley and working knowledge of Rockwell, Factory Talk, WonderWare, Siemens, Zenon, 505 Workshop, or Lookout. • Has in-depth understanding of vision systems such as Keyence and Cognex, servo drives, stepper motors, and actuators. • Working knowledge of Solidworks and machine design is a plus. • Has in-depth understanding of best practices. • Has an intermediate understanding of engineering discipline. • Have a solid understanding of the equipment strategy and can recommend solutions to critical issues. • Requires the ability to make significant decisions directly impacting the success of one or more projects, or adjacent workgroups/functions. • Advanced in your domain. • Familiar in other areas of domain expertise within the team.
