Job Description
The Crew Chief is responsible for the timely and appropriate medical care and transportation of ill and injured patients for the effective operation of Emergency Medical Services.
Essential Functions:
- Responds to emergency calls, provides treatment to patients, and transports to appropriate medical facility.
- Assesses physical condition of patients and determines proper course of action.
- Extricates victims from wreckage, homes, buildings, and confined spaces.
- Provides basic support procedures to patients such as CPR, splint application, oxygen administration, wound treatment, monitoring and relaying of vital signs, etc.
- Operates an ambulance and wide range of life-saving/life supporting equipment to provide safe and prompt transportation to appropriate medical facility.
- Provides advanced life support to patients such as cardiac monitoring, defibrillation/synchronized cardioversion, medication administration, advanced airway placement, intra-venous therapy, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, etc.
- Obtains patient’s medical history and completes required documents for submission to the appropriate medical facility.
- Performs routine maintenance and tests equipment.
- Ensures that vehicles are clean, stocked with supplies, and response-ready.
- Maintains two-way radio communications with dispatch center, hospital personnel and other public safety agencies.
- Supervises crew member or other employees assigned to the ambulance.
- Performs general housekeeping of station.
- Interacts and communicates professionally with the public, patients, their family members, medical facility staff, dispatches and other public safety agencies.
- Assists with new employee orientation/training.
Non-Essential Functions:
- Attends required training and meets all training objectives.
- Acts as a Senior Crew Chief as assigned.
- Completes required training related to patient privacy.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Education and Work Experience
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old at time of hire.
- Requires high school diploma or GED.
- Requires National/South Carolina paramedic certification supplemented by one to two years of EMS experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Must achieve minimum required scores on the Department’s pre-employment examinations prior to hire.
- Must possess an approved cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) credential and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) credential at the time of hire.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to bend, kneel, crouch and crawl in confined spaces.

- Push, pull, and maneuver a loaded stretcher (up to 700 lbs combined).
- Correctable vision sufficient to read monitors, labels, and drive safely.
