The Rolling Mill Shift Coordinator is responsible for ensuring all proper safety and housekeeping practices are followed while responsible for product flow from the Rolling Mill through the Finishing and Shipping departments. The position is responsible to ensure all principal operations are running at expected production and quality levels and assists with scheduling of production and maintenance. He/she maintains communication with the Melt shop/Caster on product being produced and adjusts the production plan when chemistry/quality issues arise. This position requires working rotating swing shifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operations Responsibilities:
- Slab Yard- Works with slab yard employee and contractors to ensure the production schedule is being followed, slabs are being stored and conditioned properly, hot charge opportunities are maximized, and QSP/JSA's are being followed. Works with maintenance to schedule and complete equipment repairs as needed.
- Reheat Furnace- Works with reheat furnace operator to ensure slabs are being charged following the schedule, all heating/charging/residence times are being met, and QSP/JSA's are being followed. Works with maintenance to schedule and complete equipment repairs as needed.
- Steckel Mill- Works with steckel mill employees to ensure all slabs are produced using proper rolling practices, monitors temperature of TRU's, assists with CRA events, and ensures QSP/JSA's are being followed. Works with maintenance to schedule and complete equipment repairs as needed.
- Roll Shop- Communicates work roll change schedule to roll shop employees. Assists with work roll/back up roll changes, inspects rolls for quality issues, and ensures QSP/JSA's are being followed. Works with maintenance to schedule and complete equipment repairs as needed.
- Down Coiler/Hot Leveler- Works with down coiler employees to ensure all plate is properly leveled and charged to the cooling bed and all coil is properly wrapped, banded, tagged, and transferred to the coil staging yard. Ensures all plate/coil are properly inspected, quality related issues are communicated to the finishing/slitter departments, and the origin of each quality defect is investigated. Ensures QSP/JSA's are being followed, and works with maintenance to schedule and complete equipment repairs as needed.
- Static Shear/Cold Leveler/Piler- Works with finishing department employees to minimize mill delays, inspect/hold plate found to have quality issues, and ensures QSP/JSA's are being followed. Works with maintenance to schedule and complete equipment repairs as needed.
- Ensure the following shift reports are completed: Shift report, Production report, Delay report, Crane Inspection reports, Mobile Equipment Inspection reports, Slab Charging report, and Plate/Coil Gauging reports.
- Support operations employee's requests and problems.
- Facilitate and participate in department meetings.
- Complete Safety/Housekeeping tour hit list items.
- Ensure proper safety permits are filled out when required.
Safety/Training Responsibilities:
Participate in housekeeping tours.
Complete safety observations.
Review and update JSA/SOP's as required.
Participate on Safety Hazard Recognition tours.
Participate in accident, incident, and near miss investigations.
Ensure employees complete all assigned training.
QUALIFICATIONS - Education, Experience & Competencies
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE
Must be an EMO and have completed the following Qualification Cards:
Steckel Mill Helper.
Reheat Furnace Helper.
Down Coiler Operator.
Reheat Furnace Operator.
Steckel Mill Operator.
Oxy/Fuel burning and torching experience
Overhead crane operating experience
Fork truck operating experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
A good understanding of production planning and maintenance systems
Mid to high-level computer skills including but not limited to Word, Excel
A basic knowledge of Rolling Mill/Scheduling functions
Strong organizational and leadership skills
Possess effective decision-making skills
Ability to multi-task and work under pressure,
Demonstrated leadership skills - maintaining composure and professionalism
Good interpersonal skills to be able to work in a team environment
Ability to locate information and read for information
Regular and reliable attendance
Preferred:
- Associates degree in Engineering, Business or related field or acceptable combination of education and experience
- Welding experience in fabrication and repairs.
- Mechanical background with experience in machine maintenance and troubleshooting
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS
This position supervises other personnel working the same shift and will lead and direct 10 MOD/MO's
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates in both the office and industrial environment.
The employee will frequently be required to:
- Sit, walk, stand - alternating throughout shift
- Reach and twist at waist/desk level
- Lift and move up to 25 pounds
- Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods
The employee will occasionally be required to:
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Reach above shoulder level and below waist level
- Balance, stoop, kneel or crouch and climb stairs

POSITION TYPE - WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
- Position is full time, hourly and is eligible for overtime
- Position works rotating 12 hour shifts to include days, nights and weekends with mandatory vacation coverage as needed
- Onsite presence required
- Travel less than 5% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations
