The Emergency Services Associate works under the supervision of the Director of Emergency Services or designee. The Emergency Services Associates cares for patients under direction of nursing and medical staff by performing the primary duties.
Skills and Abilities
Essential Technical/Motor Skills
- Fine motor skills required, eye\hand coordination, walk, ability to speak clearly, hear and answer phone, data entry.
Interpersonal Skills
- Must build rapport with patient families, visitors, peers and physicians as well as other departments and divisions.
- Displays a friendly, positive attitude and communicates with patients, families, physicians and co-workers in a professional manner.
Essential Physical Requirements
- Must be able to go from patient location to patient location to assess, evaluate and administer care plan; must be able to occasionally turn the average weight of an adult bedridden patient and ambulate patients.
- Must move, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, stand, push, pull, and lift.
- Must follow good body mechanics.
Essential Mental Abilities
- Ability to collect thorough information regarding patient''s condition and evaluate effects of care; must be able to visually inspect patient''s condition.
- Problem solve, manipulate numbers, adaptability, interpret data, calculate, comprehend, understand, explain, assess.

- Ability to visually assess patient condition; must be able to communicate with patient in order to assess condition and evaluate effects of care.

Exposure to Hazards
- Chemotherapy, blood and body fluids, physical injury from combative patients, radiation exposure.
- Infection/disease exposure from patients, visitors, and co-workers.
Other Skills and Abilities
- Transports patients to rooms as appropriate. Assists with patient disrobing, takes vital signs and pulse oximetry, applies cardiac monitors. Transports patients and families to other departments and units as designated.
- Collects and transports patient specimens including blood, urine, stool and sputum samples.
- Performs point of care testing including quality controls and instrument maintenance.
- Performs EKG's and uploads into EMR
- Performs and assists with wound care, suturing, epistaxis control, eye exams, orthopedic treatments and splinting.
- Responsible for basic housekeeping duties such as basic cleaning of rooms between patients. Performs cleaning/maintenance of patient equipment.
- Restocks supplies, SPD equipment, linens and logs in all areas in Emergency Department. Responsible for oxygen tank replacement (checking, replacing in department, and changing out).
- Performs clerical duties as needed.
- Assists licensed caregivers with procedures and patient care.

Education
- H.S. Diploma - Required
- Completion of:a. an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training program in the last three years, orb. a fundamentals of nursing course, orc. a certified nursing assistant program with obtainment of certification (C.N.A.) ord. a graduate of a professional or practical nursing program ore. a graduate of a professional or practical nursing program outside the United States and awaiting licensure in this country orf. an emergency medical technician program with obtainment of licensure (EMT) or - Required
Work Experience
- In lieu of "a" through "f" above in the Education section, documented experience working for six months as a nurse assistant in an inpatient setting, emergency medical technician or surgical tech in the past three years will qualify for this position. - Required
- 1 Year - Emergency Department experience - Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required within 90 Days
Travel Requirements
- Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
