Job Description

Performs protective service work providing emergency medical services to emergency and non-emergency E-911 calls, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Paramedic Shift Supervisors.

This is for a full-time position only.

This position works 12-hour rotating shifts and will be required to attend all continuing education classes required by Onslow County-Camp Lejeune EMS System.

Qualified candidates will be asked to participate in a skills assessment and an interview for this position. This position will be required to attend an in-person, one-week Academy that is held Monday-Friday, 0800-1700 and complete a Field Training Program after completion of the Academy.

Position Responsibilities

  • Operates ambulances to respond to emergency calls and non-emergency calls.
  • Provides basic life support techniques and first-aid procedures based on patient assessment and in accordance with established guidelines and written or verbal instructions from physicians.
  • Gathers basic medical and insurance information.
  • Responsible for communication and documentation of patient medical information during transport to receiving medical care facility.
  • Monitors patient during transport and administers additional care as needed.
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member.
  • Performs additional tasks as required.

Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of emergency medical care techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of basic life support methods, procedures and equipment; thorough knowledge of medical terminology; thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, techniques and equipment required for emergency medical treatment; thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the County; ability to perform duties in emergency situations and to evaluate and differentially diagnose patients conditions and communicate clearly with professional medical personnel; ability to perform general emergency medical treatment and specialized cardiac treatment; ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency and stress situations; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with physicians, fellow employees and the public; and ability to prepare reports; ability to read maps to research and locate patient destinations.

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements

High school diploma or GED with coursework in emergency medical services, or related field and moderate experience as a basic emergency medical technician., or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession and maintenance of certification by the North Carolina Medical Examiners Board as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Possession and maintenance of CPR Certification by the American Heart Association.

Valid drivers license.

Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget and market considerations.

North Carolina Local Governmental Employees Retirement System

Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.

NC401k

The County contributes 1% of employees gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employees deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%.

Vacation Leave

Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases.

Sick Leave

Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.

Paid Holidays

County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners approves and may adjust the schedule as deemed necessary.

ComPsych Mental Health Services

The County provides Mental Health and Life Services through ComPsych to help employees and their families with personal, family and job-related problems such as counseling, crisis support, work-life resources, legal and financial consultations, and organizational support tools.
