Summary

Under the direction of the nurse manager and supervision of the professional nurse, provides supportive care to the Emergency Department through clerical and patient care duties. Is responsible for performing specialized technical tasks, as defined in this job description, according to established protocols and reporting unusual incidence and findings. Population served by this position is all age groups.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current active State of Nevada Laboratory Assistant license or current NV EMT license
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention class within 6 months of hire or position entry

Preferred:

  • Completion of an organized nursing assistant program with a minimum of one-year acute care experience or one year of previous experience as an emergency department technician
  • Comfortable working with computers and software
  • 1-2 years working in EMS or emergency room setting
  • Phlebotomy experience in the field or hospital setting

Essential Functions

  • Maintains professional competence through formal education, workshops and unit specific education. Maintains current education file. Attends 50% or greater staff meetings, review and initials those meeting minutes not attended. Completes unit mandatary education.
  • Competently performs patient care under the direction of a registered nurse, identifies deviations from norm, and reports findings in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multi disciplinary team member, supports and assists members in all activities.
  • Assists and performs special tasks as requested by medical or nursing staff, including observation and isolation patient care, following established protocols. Prepares patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Assists unit clerk with computer order entry and answering of phones. Demonstrates appropriate telephone etiquette at all times and relays messages in a timely and appropriate manner. Is able to prioritize and maintain flow during busy times. Assists in obtaining, notifying nursing staff, highlighting returned labs on physician order sheet and files lab reports. Monitors urine collection and enters orders.
  • Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees. Maintains good working relationships among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital team members through appropriate communication.
  • Maintains an orderly and clean environment for patients and co-workers, transports and uses equipment appropriately.
  • Maintains patient comfort and privacy at all times. Performs duties in a competent and caring manner.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
  • Serves on committees, attends meetings and educational seminars to enhance and maintain awareness in techniques and procedures.
  • Able to act independently and make decisions under stress as necessary.
  • Able to perform the duties on provided competency and skills list.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
