Emergency Department Technician

The ED Technician is responsible for working closely with the nurse to provide excellent direct patient care, supporting activities of assessment, testing, and diagnosis of patients presenting to the emergency department, and helping prevent complications.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Communicating in a clear and respectful fashion with both patients and teammates with every encounter.
- Representing CMC with the highest level of customer service.
- Acting as a resource for the interdisciplinary team.
- Reporting abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions of the patient to RN. Examples include changes in vital signs, acts of daily living (ADLs), patient ambulation, and/or transfers, and daily weights.
- Obtaining and reporting vital signs as scheduled and PRN in a timely manner.
- Assisting patients with all aspects of personal care, including bowel and bladder care, ambulating, and repositioning.
- Supporting safe patient ambulation and fall prevention in the department.
- Assisting patients with maintaining a clean and organized bedside area to ensure a safe workspace that is conducive to healing.
- Remaining flexible in assisting both patients and teammates as needed.
- Intentional rounding on patients every hour to ensure their needs are met.
- Performing 12-lead EKG on patients as ordered by providers.
- Performing proper venipuncture and post-care of phlebotomy site, along with labeling each specimen with 2 forms of ID with zero labeling errors.
- Bedside retrieval and safe processing/transport of instruments to sterile processing.
- Safely transporting patients by stretcher or wheelchair outside the department for testing or admission.
- Performing direct observation and safety monitoring of patients assessed to be a threat to others, themselves, or ongoing medical interventions.
- Performing ordered POC testing in accordance with competencies.
- Stocking patient rooms & medical equipment carts with supplies according to established pars throughout the department as directed.
Required Skills and Experience
- HS diploma or equivalent experience.
- Will obtain BLS during introductory period.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Prior patient assessment and care experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard).
- May require lifting and carrying light loads up to 40 lbs, including boxes, equipment, and IV solutions.
- Stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers).
- Sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able to physically operate the equipment used for the job.
