Position Statement

The Emergency Department physician provides high quality, timely, and compassionate care to all patients presenting with acute medical conditions. Their role is critical to North Country Hospital as the first point of contract for individuals in need of emergent care. The ED physician reports directly to the Medical Director for the department with administrative reporting to the VP of Patient Care Services.

Key Responsibilities

  • To assess and stabilize patients who present with minor or critical conditions, administering medications, performing minor procedures, requesting consults as necessary, coordinating admissions for North Country Hospital or transfers to higher-level facilities as needed, timely documentation to comprehensive patient records, all while adapting to the unique challenges of a rural healthcare setting.
  • To work cooperatively and collaboratively with other members of the medical staff and healthcare team to provide emergency services for all patients who present to the emergency department.
  • Typical schedule is 12 shifts per month, consisting in general of approximately 4 shifts 7a-7p, 4 shifts 10a-9p and up to 4 shifts 7p-7a. Scaled down schedule for months with vacation if desired.

Requirements

  • BE or BC in Emergency Medicine, or physicians with significant experience in ER medicine considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Vermont Medical License
  • Current BLS, ACLS and ATLS or board certification in Emergency Medicine.

Worksite Description

The Emergency Department is staffed by physicians only, with three (3) shifts daily: a 7a-7p shift, 10a-9p shift and 7p-7a shift. The nursing staff is required to have BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC and ENPC certifications. North Country is a 25-bed designated Critical Access hospital with approximately 16,000 patient visits annually. Medical staff includes (3) General Surgeons, (1) Orthopedic Surgeon, a full-time Hospitalist program with OB/Gyn and pediatrics on-call. Diagnostic imaging, laboratory and transportation services are available on-site 24/7. Electronic Medical Record: Cerner Community Works
