JOB SUMMARY:

The Emergency Department Nurse Manager is a licensed Registered Nurse responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating the delivery of patient care within the Emergency Department. This position provides clinical and operational leadership to ensure safe, effective, patient-centered care and efficient departmental operations on a 24-hour basis. The Nurse Manager collaborates with nursing staff, medical staff, ancillary departments, executive leadership, and external stakeholders to support quality outcomes, regulatory compliance, staff development, and organizational goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supports and promotes the mission, vision, values, and strategic goals of the organization.
  • Provides leadership, direction, and supervision for daily Emergency Department operations to support optimal staff performance and patient care outcomes.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing, equipment, and supplies are available to meet patient care and operational needs.
  • Coordinates, facilitates, and manages departmental change using evidence-based practice strategies and sound leadership principles.
  • Mentors, coaches, and supports staff members in professional development, teamwork, accountability, and conflict resolution.
  • Administers and applies the terms of applicable contractual agreements with union employees in a consistent and effective manner.
  • Provides guidance, support, and constructive feedback to staff and utilizes effective communication and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Serves as a patient and employee advocate and safeguards the privacy, confidentiality, and dignity of all patients.
  • Promotes safe practices and maintains accountability for patient and employee safety within the work environment.
  • Incorporates evidence-based standards into clinical and operational decision-making and assists staff in applying those standards to the delivery of safe patient care.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory, accreditation, and professional practice requirements and assists with implementation of related changes.
  • Monitors and supports staff compliance with organizational policies, procedures, regulatory standards, and accreditation requirements.
  • Coordinates interviews and participates in the selection of Emergency Department personnel.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and provides timely feedback regarding staff performance, competency, and professional expectations.
  • Collaborates with nursing leadership to evaluate and address staffing needs, skill mix, and coverage requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with established infection prevention and control practices.
  • Facilitates regular staff meetings and promotes effective communication among departmental team members.
  • Facilitates Emergency Department Committee meetings in collaboration with the Emergency Department Director and in accordance with applicable bylaws.
  • Coordinates annual competency training with the Clinical Nurse Educator, identifies continuing education needs, and supports educational programs designed to meet those needs.
  • Initiates, supports, and monitors quality improvement activities, including monthly audit reviews, key performance indicator initiatives, and core measure performance.
  • Performs patient and employee rounding to promote engagement, identify concerns, and support continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with risk management and executive leadership to foster and sustain a culture of safety within the department.
  • Works collaboratively with nursing leadership peers to ensure adequate staffing coverage and appropriate skill mix to support safe patient care.
  • Serves as a key clinical stakeholder in emergency preparedness planning, response, and evaluation.
  • Collaborates with external emergency medicine stakeholders to support safe, timely, and effective transitions of care for Emergency Department patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
