Emergency Communication Dispatcher Full Time and Part Time Closed
Full-Time Starting Salary $26,298.28 Steelworkers Union Pay Grade 34 40 hours per week Part Time 22 per hour - No benefits Up to 19 hours per week
Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Chief of Police and the Chief of the Fire Department, the Emergency Communication Dispatcher receives emergency and non-emergency calls, advises callers, and dispatches public safety personnel and/or emergency units to specific locations as necessary. The Emergency Communication Dispatcher maintains records of emergency calls and events and performs related duties necessary for the effective operation of the Public Safety Communications Center.
General Responsibilities:
• Receives emergency and non-emergency calls, advises callers, and dispatches emergency units to specific locations if necessary. • Operates the computer-aided dispatch CAD system. • Accesses public safety databases, e.g., NCIC, BCI, MVD, for agency-related inquiries and notices. • Provides verbal information to public safety officers. • Redirects non-emergency incoming telephone calls to the appropriate public safety department. • Provides print information to public safety personnel of outside agencies, FAX, TTY, Message reports, etc., when appropriate. • Maintains records of all incoming calls and public safety actions. • Monitors hold-up and burglar alarms. • Monitors fire department municipal box alarm systems. • Records and communicates information related to citizen concerns and complaints. • Communicates with support services, e.g., tow service, other police agencies, when necessary. • Files, manages, and confirms existing arrest warrants, files, and records related to the existence of arrest warrants. • Provides written reports concerning criminal activity or personal knowledge related to criminal cases or investigations. • Follows and maintains department and position-related standards. • Related duties as required.
Desirable Abilities:
• Knowledge, Training, and Skills: • Strong verbal and written communication skills. • Spanish and Portuguese preferred. • Strong public service and customer service skills. • Ability to understand and effectively transmit oral instructions. • Knowledge of services, practices, and techniques of public safety departments, Police, Fire, Rescue. • Ability to remain calm under emergency and stressful conditions. • Ability to act decisively in emergency situations. • Ability to multi-task. • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with fellow employees and supervisors. • Ability to organize and maintain departmental records and reports. • Ability to follow prescribed rules and regulations. • Knowledge of the geographical areas of the city and the ability to learn the street directory and neighborhood characteristics. • Ability to use complex computer systems and related technology.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High School diploma or equivalent. • Two years of experience in customer service, public safety, or a related field.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to sit for long periods of time. • Ability to operate public safety computer systems. • Ability to respond as needed to emergency situations. • Ability to work irregular hours. • Ability to work with limited or restricted break times.
Examination:
• 50 Oral • 50 Written
Additional Details:
• Candidates will be notified of the written exam date after the application deadline. • In order to proceed to the oral interview, candidates must have a passing score of 70 or above on the written test. • Details of the program and schedule will be explained during the interview process. • All candidates must pass a complete BCi Background check prior to being selected for the formal training program. • Successful candidates who pass the written and oral examinations will be required to undergo a brief training program pertaining to dispatching for both police and fire.
