Position Summary
The Teacher Consultant (Special Education/ASD) provides district-wide leadership, consultation, assessment, compliance oversight, and instructional support for students with disabilities. The position collaborates with students, families, general and special education staff, and outside agencies to ensure appropriate programming, legal compliance, and positive student outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Education, Special Education, or related field.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Special Education endorsement (LD, CI, EI, or ASD).
- Full or temporary approval as a Teacher Consultant.
- Minimum ten(10) years of successful Special Education teaching experience.
- Knowledge of Michigan special education laws, procedures, and compliance requirements.
- Experience with special education assessments and IEP development.
- Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and collaboration skills.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluation, Assessment, and Compliance
- Manage a Teacher Consultant caseload.
- Participate in evaluation teams, Teacher Assistance Teams, Child Screening Committees, PLCs, and other support teams.
- Conduct evaluations and support students with a variety of disabilities, including ASD, SLD, EI, CI, VI, HI, PI, OHI, SLI, and ADHD.
- Administer assessments, conduct interviews and observations, analyze multiple data sources, and prepare comprehensive educational reports.
- Interpret evaluation results and recommendations for parents, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate and oversee compliance processes, including REEDs, METs, IEPs, FBAs, BIPs, MDRs, and Transition Plans.
- Facilitate, chair, and monitor IEP team meetings in accordance with IDEA and MARSE requirements.
- Support behavior intervention planning, crisis response, and implementation of behavior supports.
- Support data-based eligibility determinations and Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) decisions.
Instruction and Consultation
- Provide consultation, facilitation, and coordination to students, families, and staff through MTSS, evaluation, and IEP processes.
- Assist in developing programs and interventions based on evaluation results.
- Support inclusive practices through differentiated instruction, accommodations, modifications, assistive technology, communication systems, visual supports, and behavior plans.
- Provide direct and indirect services to students and families, including classroom support and, when needed, direct instruction.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and training to special education staff, paraprofessionals, and parents regarding best practices and special education procedures.
- Support center program placements, transitions, and IEP implementation.
- Assist staff in successfully including students with disabilities in general education settings.
Communication and Documentation
- Prepare comprehensive written reports, records, and documentation in a timely manner.
- Communicate evaluation results, intervention strategies, and recommendations effectively in both written and oral formats.
- Serve as a liaison among schools, families, district administration, center programs, and community agencies.
- Maintain accurate compliance records and student documentation.
- Participate in district meetings, professional learning, and ongoing training.
