Job Title: Elementary Head Custodian

Reports To: Building Principal & Director of Facilities

Department: Facilities

Assigned Building: Elementary School

Wage Scale: Maintenance IFLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

The Elementary Head Custodian serves as the primary operational lead for a school facility, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students and staff. This role balances daily custodial tasks with grounds maintenance, light mechanical repairs, and evening custodial services. The Head Custodian coordinates closely with the Principal to support building events while adhering to Facilities Department standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Comprehensive Cleaning: Complete daily custodial tasks, including cleaning the main entrance, front offices, common areas, and the cafeteria. Trash removal and floor maintenance are also included.

• Grounds: Police the school grounds for trash and debris, empty exterior trash receptacles, and inspect playgrounds to ensure equipment is in proper working order and mulch is evenly spread throughout.

• Seasonal Operations: Lead snow and ice removal, plowing, salting, and coordinate intensive summer deep-cleaning projects.

• Event Logistics: Manage room setup and tear-downs for meetings and events, including furniture moving and adjusting work hours for evening facility rentals and school programs.

• Systems & Maintenance: Perform light repairs, lighting, ceiling tiles, etc., and monitor building water softener systems.

• Inventory & Purchasing: Monitor building supply levels for cleaning and consumables, place orders via the district warehouse to ensure no service interruptions.

• Digital Management: Use CMMS software to submit, track, and close out building work orders and maintenance requests.

• Building Security: Act as the primary lead for daily building lock-down, alarm engagement, and participation in the Building Safety Committee. Take an active role in emergency response and drills, including managing the buildings fire alarm system.

• Professionalism & Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality regarding building activities and interact professionally with staff, students, and patrons.

Education and Experience:

• Minimum Education: High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

• Experience: One to three months of related experience and/or training in landscaping or custodial preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, and Requirements:

• Drivers License: Must maintain a valid drivers license.

• Compliance: Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment random drug and alcohol testing.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

• Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to read, speak, and write in English.

• Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to calculate chemical dilution ratios and interpret basic data.

• Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where limited standardization exists.

• Computer Skills: Proficiency with word processing and database software, ability to use CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) software to manage workloads.

• Basic Trades: Proficiency in light maintenance, such as changing ceiling tiles, light bulbs, sink aerators, and hanging frames.

• Equipment Proficiency: Skilled in operating and maintaining custodial equipment, such as vacuums, floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, etc.

Physical Requirements:

• Physical Activity: Prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, and kneeling.

• Lifting: Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds or more.

• Vision: Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

• Conditions: The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. Occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions, high places, fumes, airborne particles, and vibration.

• Noise Level: The noise level in the work environment is typically loud when operating equipment but quiet during standard building hours.
