Position: Assistant Principal (1.0 FTE)

Location: Elementary School: Atkinson

Reports To: Building Principal

General Description:

The Assistant Principal is responsible for fulfilling the duties outlined in Chapter 71 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Under the guidance of the school Principal, the Assistant Principal provides leadership in curriculum and management, oversees day-to-day building administration, and ensures the safety and welfare of students, staff, and activities. The role involves maintaining a secure, pleasant, and effective educational environment, implementing disciplinary measures as needed, and adhering to school district policies.

Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts certification as an Assistant Principal/Principal.
  • Master's Degree required; additional graduate-level coursework beyond the Master's preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as an Assistant Principal, director, department head, or lead teacher preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with experience in facilitating communication and group decision-making.
  • Proven success in developing, evaluating, and implementing curriculum and instructional programs.
  • Effective administrative and management skills.
  • Excellent public-speaking and writing abilities, including proficient use of computers, technology, and information management tools.

Performance Responsibilities:

Supervise the Elementary School''s Educational Program:

  • Monitor the implementation of the school curriculum, ensuring that content, scope, and sequence are appropriate for students'' learning at various grade and developmental levels.
  • Set expectations for all students to meet standards in reading, writing, listening, speaking, computation, and scientific inquiry.
  • Promote a variety of teaching methods and programs to enhance student learning, including the integration of special needs students into core curricula and activities.
  • Foster a culture of respect for human differences and a supportive school climate where children can reach their full potential.
  • Collaborate with staff to implement and supervise the evaluation of instructional programs and interpret data to improve teaching and learning.

Provide Effective and Dynamic Leadership:

  • Communicate the school's vision, goals, long-term plans, needs, and accomplishments to students, staff, families, and the broader community, facilitating effective communication among all parties involved in the educational process.
  • Delegate authority to encourage staff initiative and participatory decision-making.
  • Implement and enforce effective educational policies and procedures in compliance with School Committee initiatives.
  • Establish and uphold high standards of student conduct, enforcing discipline as necessary while respecting students'' rights to due process.
  • Actively engage with parents and community members to ensure effective communication on matters affecting school policy, program implementation, and student behavior.

Manage School Staff and Administrative Functions Efficiently:

  • Collaborate with the Principal to interview, supervise, and evaluate all licensed staff, with assistance from the Executive Director of Special Education when necessary.
  • Support the development of professional and administrative staff.
  • Assist in the orientation and in-service training of teachers, ensuring compliance with proper administrative procedures.
  • Work with building leadership to draft and revise a comprehensive school budget, involving teachers and system-wide administrators in the process.
  • Supervise the maintenance of accurate student and teacher records, ensuring privacy and confidentiality in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Implement a school calendar and develop student and staff schedules.
  • Oversee the maintenance, cleanliness, and security of the school building and grounds, working closely with the Senior Custodian(s).
  • Conduct staff meetings as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools.
