POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of a physician, and following established policies and procedures, provides assistance to patients in the EMG Lab and performs nerve conduction studies and other neurophysiologic studies as requested by physicians. The Electromyography Technician provides technical and ancillary support to the department through demonstrated clinical and academic competency.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Primary responsibilities:
  • Performs common and uncommon NCS in a highly skilled, patient-appropriate manner. Recognized normal and abnormal results and recognizes and takes reasonable steps to eliminate physiological and non-physiological artifact.
  • The ability to provide a high level of instruction to EMG Technicians, residents and fellows, as deemed necessary by and under supervision of an EDX physician.
  • Performs NCS in the ICU or other hospital units, understanding the special technical requirements of these areas.
  • Updates patient demographics in electronic medical chart; obtains accurate patient history and assesses the age specific needs of each patient. Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient safety, comfort and modesty at all times. Outlines the nature of the procedures and tests with the patient; answers any concerns or refers the patient to a nurse or physician if necessary.
  • Determines the electrodiagnostic studies to perform based on the requisition. Ensures that exams requested match patient condition and/or history and communicates with nurses and physicians regarding any questions or specific clinical aspects of the tests.
  • Sets up equipment as necessary and performs techniques. Understands the interface between NCS equipment and other electrophysiological devices and procedures. Knowledgeable of filter settings and EDX equipment settings. Works through physician's requirements to provide appropriate testing and provides additional variations of techniques as requested. Removes, discards, or cleans Nerve Conduction electrodes in accordance with universal precautions.
  • Prepares a summary report of the electrophysiological data and compiles representative original recordings.
  • Enters and records all patient charges for studies performed. Completes and forwards charge slips for patient billing.
  • Monitors patient's conditions and if it is determined assistance may be required, the employee takes action to facilitate the best course of care to include: nurse involvement, further monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions. Ensures that inpatients are ready to be transported back to the unit promptly and safely when tests are completed.
  • Maintains a high standard of cleanliness in the testing rooms. Prepares testing rooms with clean linen and all necessary equipment and supplies. Ensures the proper care and sterilization of reusable electrodes, testing rooms and associated areas.
  • Ensures sufficient and appropriate inventory of EMG-related supplies. Orders electrodes and other EMG laboratory supplies. Conducts quality control testing of equipment as necessary. Ensures the proper maintenance and function of the equipment through interaction with both internal and service vendors to maximize equipment up-time, patient care, and in order minimize dollar impact to the hospital.
  • Assists with the scheduling of EMG procedures or follow-ups. Provides patients with any documentation as required relating to their EMG/Nerve conduction study (NCS) testing. Performs related clerical duties as needed, such as filing, faxing, mailing, etc.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and workshops; reviews and keeps abreast of field standards via subject-related publications and articles. May research articles for lecture presentations for the physicians. Attends neuromuscular rounds and resident rounds as requested.

General responsibilities:
  • Performs patient focused customer service and ensures the department standards are met appropriately and achieved. Communicates patient complaints professionally to the appropriate supervisor. Keeps discussions around patients to a minimum and ensures that patients are not subjected to departmental conversations and/or any inappropriate behavior. Handles telephone calls and requests for services both professionally and appropriately.
  • Completes procedures in timely fashion. Completes work by the end of the shift or communicates with coworkers about work that needs completion.
  • Adapts to changes in the departmental needs including but not limited to: offering assistance to other team members, adjusting assignments, etc. Accommodates patient's needs through flexibility in staff scheduling and ensuring timeliness of studies.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and hospital's mission.
  • Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
  • Maturity and the ability to establish good rapport with patients, public, and staff
  • Capacity to deal with severely ill patients and the circumstances that surround these patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Minimum of a High School diploma or GED. Must also be a graduate of Neurodiagnostic Technology program or have at least one year on-the-job training in a similar role.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • CPR required.
  • Certification by the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists Board, or by another professional accredited association, is required.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of one year of experience as an EMG Technician, or equivalent role, is required.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Acquired skills and training to perform proficient and accurate NCV and other neurophysiological testing.
  • Proficiency with standard software programs used in healthcare (such as MS Word, Outlook) and web browsers, patient registration systems and electronic medical record.
  • Proficiency with basic mathematical skills required.
  • Strong written communication skills required (email, summarizing and translating studies, entering results into charts).
  • Ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Must present a positive, patient-focused demeanor and a professional appearance.
  • Must be physically able to move, lift and position patients; move and lift equipment and supplies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and to alleviate any apprehensions, to instruct students and to interact with other staff technicians.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.
