This position is for skilled electrical work in the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical traffic control devices, wiring in public buildings, fire circuits, boxes and street light maintenance.
The work involves the application of electrical, electronic andelectro-mechanical skills in the field and in the shop; and emergency standby duty on a scheduled rotating basis; with some exposure to electrical, mechanical and height hazards. Work is performed under supervision and is subject to inspection upon completion.
Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED supplemented by courses in electronics and solid state circuitry, three to five years experience in the skilled maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, a valid CDL Class "B" or higher driver's license within 6 months of hire required, certified with International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) within one year of hire. Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job is considered.
Important attributes include knowledge of the principles of electricity and electrical circuits; occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; and of standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic devices. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other City employees. Skill in the use and care of hand and bench tools and electronic testing equipment for electro-mechanical and solid state devices.
Mental and physical requirements include the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, work in high precarious places, and work near moving mechanical parts. Working conditions are typically noisy.
Pension program: Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF): Ten years required for vesting. IMRF Death Benefit – Annual Salary after 1 year's service. IMRF Disability Benefit – 50% of Salary up to 30 months after 1 year's service.
Union membership: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers – Local Union 51 – Union dues through payroll deduction within 30 days of employment.
Vacation: No vacation in first year of employment. Earn 6.67 hours per month. (If employee begins service prior to 15th of the month, they will be given vacation credit for the full month)
Sick leave: Shall accrue on a basis of 6.67 hours per month. No limit on total days accumulated.
Personal leave: In the first calendar year of employment, no credits will be granted. On January 1st of the first, second, third and fourth full year of employment, the employee will be granted 32 hours of personal time for use in the year. Each year beginning with the fifth full year of service, employees will be granted 40 hours of personal time for use during the year. Personal time, if not used in the year granted, will be lost.
Bereavement leave: Up to 24 hours paid Bereavement Leave in the event of a death of a member of the immediate family.
Paid parental leave: Up to 2 weeks paid leave for birth/adoption of child. (eligible after completing one (1) year of service)
Holidays: 10 Paid Holidays per year.
Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance Coverage is effective the first day of the next month following completion of one full calendar month of employment. Members may opt out of the City's insurance program with proof of other coverage, coverage for your dependents is optional. The City of Peoria offers two options for medical insurance, a low-deductible and a high-deductible plan. Depending on your medical plan selection, you may also enroll in the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) program. The City also offers Dental and Vision insurance. Your insurance premiums will be deducted from your payroll check. The total premium amount will be based on your elections and payroll frequency. On your hire date, you will meet with the City's Benefits Administrator to receive detailed information on the plans and ask any questions you may have regarding the insurance.
Life insurance: $10,000 group term Life Insurance and $10,000 Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance – No cost to employee.

Residency: You are required to establish residency within Peoria city limits within one year of employment. However, if you choose to waive that requirement, you must live within a twenty (20) mile radius of City Hall and give up 2% of your base pay for five (5) years. You will need to complete a Waiver of Residency form in the Human Resources Department.
