General Information
The City of Ames has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineering Manager to provide support to the Electric Services Department. Under the supervision of the Electric Services Director, this position supervises the activities of the Electrical Engineering Division of the Electric Utility; plans and designs electrical transmission and distribution facilities and services.

Compensation Philosophy:
The City of Ames has a compensation philosophy for our merit salary ranges that provides growth for employees as they gain experience and expertise in their roles. The minimum pay of each range is intended to reflect an employees qualifications that meet the positions minimum requirements. The median of any range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial or extensive training. The City may consider a candidates education, experience, and skills that are above the minimum requirements when considering a salary closer to the median. The median salary for this position is $137,568.

Examples of Essential Job Functions
Examples of Essential Job Functions: Coordinates, designs, and directs electrical transmission and distribution projects; prepares specifications for major materials and construction contracts; requests quotations and evaluates competitive bids. Designs and recommends improvements to interconnections with other utilities including transmission ties, substations, and metering; advises on and coordinates service for industrial, commercial, and residential customers; prepares and administers the Electrical Engineering Division budget and the distribution extensions and improvements budget; supervises and assigns work to division personnel; operates light vehicle. Serves as project lead, manages transmission/distribution engineering and construction contractors.

Other Job Functions: Directs construction inspection and contract administration; analyzes results of electrical transmission and distribution projects; designs and lays out new street lighting installations; participates in studies of electric loads, faults, and rates; manages mapping and recording data base relating to electrical system changes and additions.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Completion of a Bachelors of Science in electrical engineering, and five years of related professional experience in utility electrical engineering. Experience in transmission design, planning, or construction preferred.
Licenses and Certificates: Must be able to obtain a valid drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering; considerable knowledge of engineering objectives, purposes, methods, and practices as applied to electric utilities; considerable knowledge pertaining to current National Electric Safety Code as it applies to electric utilities; knowledge of civil engineering as applied to power line construction; knowledge of total electric utility operations; knowledge of the principles and techniques of supervision. working knowledge of computers as applied to electrical engineering; knowledge of all safety rules as stated in the adopted safety manual.
Considerable skill in interpreting field notes and diagrams; considerable skill in the design of electrical facilities and services.
Considerable ability to perform technical research and provide reliable advice on difficult electrical engineering problems; ability to prepare and interpret engineering plans and specifications; working ability to plan, schedule, supervise and evaluate the work of subordinates; ability to perform advanced and complex mathematical computations and analyses; ability to operate a light vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens and other electric utility customers, supervisors, subordinates, other City employees, contractors, and vendors.
Supplemental Information
General Physical Characteristics: The work involves sitting and using arm/leg controls 50 percent of the time; standing and walking 50 percent of the time; frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds; and occasionally lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds.
Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects or parts, use of measurement devices, or assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.
Required Physical Activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Environmental Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside occasionally and occasionally includes being exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
Examples of Equipment Used on the Job: Light vehicle; telephone; pager; two- way radio; general office equipment; a variety of audio-visual equipment; personal computers and peripheral equipment; word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, and communications software; manual and automated drafting equipment, a variety of measurement and diagnostic equipment; a variety of printed materials; general purpose maintenance equipment; safety equipment and clothing.
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience; phone interview; hiring assessment; on-site interview, which will include a manager meeting; and completion of reference checks and a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check.
