Electrical Engineer - Substation

We are recruiting on behalf of a global engineering and consulting client for an Electrical Engineer – Substation to support projects across the U.S. and internationally. This role focuses on delivering electrical protection & control and physical substation designs, ranging from small distribution facility upgrades to large transmission projects. The position offers a unique opportunity to influence the resiliency, reliability, and economic operation of the electric grid.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design of high voltage electrical substations (13kV – 500kV).
• Develop proposals, project scopes, conceptual designs, and execution plans.
• Prepare engineering cost/labor estimates and project schedules.
• Design physical substation layouts, including yard arrangements, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, AC/DC power systems, and raceways.
• Design protection and control systems, including panel layouts, one-lines, three-lines, AC schematics, DC elementaries, and relay wiring.
• Perform engineering calculations and studies (grounding, lightning protection, AC/DC load analysis) and prepare technical reports.
• Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and factory acceptance testing.
• Coordinate with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line).
• Mentor junior engineers and designers.
• Communicate regularly with clients and external stakeholders.
• Conduct quality reviews of design deliverables.
• Provide short-term field support during construction, as needed.
• Support business development and marketing initiatives.
• Engage in relay settings, 3D/intelligent design, or professional/industry committees as appropriate.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program plus 3+ years of experience (consulting preferred).
• OR Bachelor’s in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from ABET-accredited program, completion of FE exam, plus 3+ years of experience.
• OR Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with 2+ years of experience (consulting preferred).
• Strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Proficient with AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D/3D rendering, Microsoft Office, and other engineering analysis software.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities in a quantitative environment.
• Attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to collaborate in team settings.
• EIT Certification preferred.
