Summary
Performs professional level design and project management of electrical transmission, susbstation, and distribution projects including customer contact, field investigation, analysis, design, preparation of plans and specifications, supervision of engineering staff, and coordination with construction and operations staff.
Essential Functions
- Perform electrical engineering design, review, approval and project management of street lighting, overhead and underground electric distribution and transmission systems, and new and existing substations;
- Perform analysis of electrical systems including NESC calculations, short circuit calculations, load flow modeling calculations, (PSS/E) voltage drop calculations, transformer sizing, lighting calculations, capacitor application, overcurrent protection and coordination;
- Prepare cost estimates and written reports; develop specifications for materials and services; promote and represent LP&L in personal contacts and presentations to customers, architects, engineers, committees and boards;
- Supervise engineering staff as required to accomplish the tasks above;
- Research and apply new materials, methods, techniques, and technologies to expand and improve the efficiency, reliability, safety, and quality of the LP&L distribution system;
- Provide support, applications, and training for computer, software, GIS systems and SCADA systems (ACS);
- Monitor, document, and recommend policies for departmental environmental compliance;
- Monitor electric systems operations and respond to emergency call-out to assist in system restoration and customer contact;
- Develop, monitor, and administer contracts for materials and services;
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Completion of a bachelor degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field with an additional four years of experience in electric distribution engineering; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:
Valid current Drivers License
Physical exam required
Registered Professional Engineer
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- The principles and practices of electrical engineering. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas;
- The principles and practices of electric utility design, construction, and operation;
- Perform professional level electrical engineering duties.
Ability to:
- Supervise the work of others;
- Communicate effectively with others;
- Maintain records and prepare reports;
- Use a variety of computer software including word processing, spreadsheet, database, CAD, and simple programming;
- Use and interpret data from a variety of electrical and electronic instruments
and devices;
- Provide excellent customer service.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently stand and walk during the shift.
- Occasionally climb stairs, ladders, and inclined surfaces.
- Frequently bend during the shift.
- Frequently kneel during the shift.
- Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
