Job Title: Electrical Apprentice

Exemption Status: Test Nonexempt Reports to: Director of Maintenance Date Revised: 21/02/2026 Dept: School Maintenance-245 Days

Primary Responsibilities & Duties:

Assist in reading and interpreting blueprints and related diagrams and assist with the appropriate installation and repair procedures for wiring electrical installations correctly.

Assist in laying out new or modified installations to adhere to the national and municipal electrical codes.

Assist in completing required documentation to include work orders, material requisitions, purchase orders, and other related documents.

Assist in installing all electrical conduits, pull boxes, and necessary systems using good workmanship and proper tools and equipment.

Assist in troubleshooting, testing, and repairing all electrical equipment and components to ensure compatibility and safety in each installation. Use proper test equipment to detect hazards and needs for adjustments, relocation, or replacement of electrical systems and devices.

Assist in estimating materials, orders, and obtain materials required, and informs immediate supervisor of needs and requirements to complete the objective.

Assist in maintaining the District vehicle with periodic vehicle maintenance inspection and inform the supervisor of any known problems with tools or vehicles promptly. Use all tools in the manner for which they are intended.

Assist in performing all functions in the electrical craft using proper procedures and safety equipment. Conform to all District policy regarding vehicle operation and seat belt policy whether as driver or passenger in a District vehicle. Notify supervisors of any accident or injury promptly.

Communicate effectively with department heads, principals, and all other maintenance personnel in a professional manner to locate correct repair and complete each project.

Assist in obtaining and setting up scaffolds, ladders, and personnel lifts to assist with performing electrical work in multi-story buildings.

May work irregular hours.

Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Vocational and other technical courses preferred

Experience:

  • Six months of general knowledge of the electrical craft is preferred
  • Must obtain a valid apprentice electricians license as required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation at the start of the apprenticeship
  • Must have a valid Texas drivers license that meets the District driver standards to operate a District vehicle
  • Must maintain a valid Texas Drivers License and driving record that meets District standards

Special Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of electrical circuits, wiring, and operating principles of motors
  • Knowledge of current electrical codes and ordinances
  • Ability to assist with blueprints, schematics, and written reference material
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve problems
  • Ability to use hand and power tools

Supervisory Responsibilities: None
