Description
The purpose of this classification is to provide responsible manual labor regarding the installation, maintenance, energizing and repairs of all high and low voltage lines, transformers, capacitors, switches, and street lights within the City distribution system, ensuring reliable electric power to all City of Alexandria customers. Position requires call out rotation.
Examples of Duties
Installs, maintains, and repairs underground and overhead structures, including high mast lighting and street light systems, poles, cables, and related equipment to carry power transmission/distribution lines used to conduct electrical energy between generating stations, substations, and consumers.
Installs and maintains high and low voltage underground electric lines: troubleshoots underground power problems; splices underground distribution feeders.
Diagnoses power problems: communicates with the public and customers and runs electrical checks to determine the source of the power outage; determines the course of action needed.
Runs new overhead services; assists in erecting poles and adjusting wires.
Climbs poles or rides in a truck-mounted boom bucket to install equipment, remove defective wiring, transfer wires, conduct repairs, and conduct pole top rescues.
Assists with training Electric Line Workers and Trades Workers. Works collaboratively with Utility Customer Service to perform electric cutoffs when needed.
Performs switching of circuits during storms and daily maintenance.
Performs manual labor associated with construction, maintenance, and repair of power transmission/distribution systems (which may include laying/installing pipe, boring under roads/driveways, pouring concrete, trimming tree limbs and bushes, digging holes or trenches, driving ground rods, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, flagging traffic, etc.).
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in the construction, maintenance and repair of power transmission/distribution systems which may include a backhoe, trencher, bucket truck, line truck, boring rig, tensioning rig, derrick/digger truck, forklift, tractor, mini excavator, phasing stick, voltage ohmmeter, breakers, regulators, hydraulic tools, jackhammer, air compressor, pipe horn, post hole digger, shovel, axe, saw, chain saw, mechanic tools, etc.
Maintains an adequate supply of equipment, tools, supplies, and materials on trucks for use at work sites; prepares materials for assigned jobs; transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials needed.
Reads and interprets electrical diagrams and maps.
Receives, reviews, prepares and/or maintains the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position: receives various forms, reports, meter readings, electrical diagrams, maps, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards and/or maintains work orders, time sheets, overtime reports, test reports of PCB transformers, and appropriate documents for EPA and DEQ.
Required to work after normal business hours, weekends, and holidays: called out as needed 24/7 to maintain service to customers in the event of a natural disaster, power outages, downed power lines, trees, etc., or for any other disruption of service.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, with vocational or technical school training in electrical system installation, repair, and maintenance; supplemented by three (3) years of progressively responsible line work. Must possess a valid Class B commercial drivers license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class B commercial drivers license at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. Certification from Linemans Training School preferred.
