## Summary
The EKG Technician is responsible for operating EKG machines that record diagnostic cardiac activity for appropriate testing. The EKG Technician explains the procedure, prepares the patient for the attachment of electrodes, records cardiac activity, observes the findings, and generates reports for physician diagnosis. The EKG Technician is also responsible for attaching various arrhythmia monitor devices such as the Holter Monitor or Zio Cardiac Monitor.
## Responsibilities
- Perform electrocardiogram (EKG) tests on patients using EKG machines and related equipment.
- Prepare patients for EKG procedures by explaining the process, positioning patients correctly, and attaching electrodes to the chest, arms, and legs as needed.
- Ensure proper functioning and calibration of EKG equipment, troubleshoot any issues, and maintain equipment cleanliness and safety.
- Record and document EKG results accurately, including patient information, test conditions, and any abnormalities or deviations from normal cardiac rhythms.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, including cardiologists and nurses, to relay EKG findings and assist in patient care decisions.
- Monitor patients during EKG procedures for signs of discomfort, distress, or adverse reactions and respond appropriately.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to privacy regulations and ethical standards in handling cardiac data and patient information.
- Assist in scheduling and coordinating EKG appointments, ensuring efficient workflow and patient satisfaction.
## Minimum Training and Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current certification as a Certified EKG Technician (CET) or equivalent certification preferred but not required.
- OR documented on-the-job EKG training with at least one year of directly-related patient care experience in a health care setting.
- Experience in Holter Monitor scanning and Stress Treadmill procedures preferred.
- Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and electrocardiography principles.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and proficiency in recording and interpreting EKG data.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiple responsibilities, and maintain composure in fast-paced clinical environments.
## Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
- Current certification as a Certified EKG Technician (CET) or equivalent certification preferred but not required.
- OR documented on-the-job EKG training with at least one year of directly-related patient care experience in a health care setting.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required: Either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers or AHA recognized equivalent, or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
## Physical Requirements
- Mobility: Move around the healthcare facility and assist patients with positioning for EKG procedures.
- Manual Dexterity: Hand-eye coordination to attach electrodes accurately and operate EKG equipment.
- Stamina: Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move equipment as necessary.
- Visual Acuity: Ability to read EKG tracings and identify abnormalities.
- Emotional Resilience: Compassion when working with patients who may be experiencing cardiac-related issues.
- Specific Physical Abilities:
- Continuous: Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, maintaining 20/40 vision (corrected), seeing and recognizing objects close or at a distance, matching/discriminating colors, determining depth perception, maintaining hearing acuity with correction, performing gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements, dealing effectively with stressful situations, maintaining tactile sensory functions, and fully using both legs.
- Frequent: Ability to work rotating shifts, work overtime as required, work in a latex-safe environment, work in confined/cramped spaces, perform job functions from kneeling positions, bend at the waist, twist at the waist, squat, perform pinching operations, perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands, perform firm grasping with fingers and hands, perform fine manipulation with fingers and hands, reach overhead, reach in all directions, and exert up to 50 lbs. of force (e.g., transferring a 100 lb. patient, pushing a wheelchair, pushing a stretcher).
- Infrequent: Ability to work outside in temperature extremes, work from elevated areas, lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor/to 36 inches unassisted, lift from 36 to overhead 25 lbs.
