Job Title: EHS Specialist III
Location: San Diego, CA
Type: Contract
Compensation: $45.00 - $49.00/hr
Work Model: Onsite
Hours: 8am to 5pm

Responsibilities

  • Support and develop environmental, health, and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, and local fire codes.
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining EHS programs such as Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout, Emergency Response, Waste Management, Ergonomics, and PPE.
  • Monitor compliance and prepare EHS reports for regulatory agencies, maintaining accurate records, permits, and documentation.
  • Conduct regular EHS inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and non-compliance issues; recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs for new hires and existing employees; promote a safety-focused culture.
  • Lead or participate in incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions; maintain incident records.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities, including drills and actual emergencies, and organize site-specific Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • Oversee hazardous and non-hazardous waste management programs, ensuring proper labeling, storage, transportation, and disposal per regulations, with strong focus on chemical and biological waste, spill response, and compliance with San Diego County HAZMAT and CERS portal.
  • Analyze EHS data and trends to identify opportunities for improvement; support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stay current with evolving EHS regulations and industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in an EHS role, preferably in biotechnology, medical device, or manufacturing environments, with extensive background in chemical and biological waste management.
  • Professional Safety & Health Officer/Specialist, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or similar certification (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT, and San Diego County HAZMAT and CERS portal.
  • Experience with EHS program development, implementation, and regulatory reporting.
  • Proficiency in conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and EHS audits.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills; ability to deliver effective training.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, influencing employees at all levels.
  • Physical ability to perform job functions, including lifting up to 50 pounds, wearing PPE, and working in various environments (office, manufacturing, research labs, vivarium).
  • Experience with hazardous and biological waste, spill response, and chemical waste management.
  • Knowledge of San Diego County HAZMAT and CERS portal is required.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED, HAZWOPER certifications preferred.
