Education Assistant Manager

Position: Education Assistant Manager

Reports To: Education Manager

Compensation: $20/hour

Position Summary:

The Education Assistant Manager provides direct support to the Education Managers. The incumbent will serve as the primary communication channel between Education Department leadership and Educators. The Education Assistant Manager will provide clear, consistent, and participatory support for the Education team. In addition, the Education Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the supervision of the day-to-day programs and team members in the educational efforts for the Aquarium. The Education Assistant Manager supports the training of the Aquarium Educators to deliver unique, interesting, fun, educational, and empathy building programming. The Education Assistant Manager works closely with the Education Leadership Team to ensure high quality programming for all audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor''s degree in biological science, education or a related field preferred
  • One year experience in supervising employees
  • Experience in STEAM programming delivery and development

Critical Skills/Competencies:

  • National Association for Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide status preferred
  • Strong computer software skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Office 365
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Communicate clearly and positively with Aquarium colleagues
  • Ability to follow animal handling protocols for animals including tarantulas, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and insects
  • Innate drive to learn and grow and to help others, including team members and guests, do the same
  • Proactive and timely, able to focus and complete tasks under deadlines
  • Strong understanding of team leadership and accountability
  • Ability to have difficult conversations and hold team members accountable for their performance
  • Valid Utah driver's license is required
  • Ability to operate company vehicles according to protocols: must keep a favorable driving record and be willing to permit a periodic review of driving records
  • Bilingual English-Spanish a plus

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the front-line supervisor for Aquarium Educators
  • Ensures that supervision is consistent and fair
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of the Education team, including the creation and following of daily schedules
  • Communicates with the Education team in a timely, professional, and efficient manner
  • Completes formal and informal observations and evaluations of Aquarium Educators, uses data to inform decisions
  • Coaches, trains, and mentors Aquarium Educators under the supervision of Education Managers
  • Schedules and conducts regular one-on-one meetings with Aquarium Educators under the supervision of Education Managers
  • Assists with record keeping, scheduling, and evaluating Aquarium Educators in handling ambassador animals under the supervision of Education Managers
  • Leads regular huddles for the Education department, including keeping an agenda and notes, as assigned
  • Addresses conflict among staff in a timely and proactive manner, soliciting support from Education Managers as needed
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and training to Aquarium Educators
  • Monitors attendance for the Education department as assigned
  • Approves accurate timesheets on time for each pay period
  • Performs other duties as assigned under the supervision of Education Managers

Scope of Position:

  • 40 hours per week, with 10-hour shifts any time between 6:30 AM and 11:00 PM
  • Includes weekends, evenings, and holidays (excluding Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day)
  • Shift times vary
  • Some travel may be required

Physical Demands of the Job:

  • Extended periods of standing and walking
  • Presenting while holding animals up to twenty pounds
  • Talking on a phone and communication via text, talk, and email
  • Extended periods of sitting with data entry

Special Working Conditions:

  • Overall work environment while performing this job includes exposure to weather conditions and the noise level is usually moderate
