Benefits Description Provides bilingual instructional assistance to children. Positions in this classification require the ability to speak, read, and write at the eighth grade level in one of the following languages: Armenian, Korean, Russian, or Spanish. Works under the close supervision of a teacher and, within a framework of established procedures, performs a variety of classroom bilingual instructional and support duties.

Vacancies: • Various opportunities exist for substitute assignments (temporary/as needed basis). • All positions are part-time and range from 3 - 6 hours per day. • Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate at the sixth step only. • Assignments may be in any part of the district boundaries (Glendale, La Crescenta or Montrose).

Based on the immediate and future needs of the district, the same recruitment may also be used to fill permanent positions as opportunities become available. Examples of Duties

  • Provides bilingual instructional assistance, at the direction of a teacher, to students of limited or not-English speaking ability.
  • Performs a variety of responsible instructional assistance tasks in accordance with instructions from a classroom teacher such as assisting students with written work, reading, math, and social studies.
  • Assists in supervision groups of students at activity centers.
  • Assists with activities preparation, prepares bulletin board and other displays.
  • Responds to student questions and concerns.
  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks maintaining files and records, typing, preparing dittos, and operating various types of audio-visual and office equipment.
  • Assists in class supervision on field trips.
  • Performs the less complex pullout instructional tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Employment Standards Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to speak, read, and write the required language.
  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Desirable: Written and oral proficiency in an additional language.

CLASS QUALIFICATIONS Ability to:

  • Speak, read, and write at the eighth grade level the language required by the particular program, or students, to which assigned.
  • Work within the framework and requirements of the instructional program to which assigned.
  • Operate office and audio-visual equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Compile and maintain records and files.

For permanent positions, the examination process may include a multiple-choice written test and will include a qualifications appraisal interview. Candidates will be notified of the date(s), the actual examination part(s), and relative weight(s) at the appropriate time.

Prior to employment, a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis. Also required after an offer of employment are a pre-employment physical exam (district-paid) and fingerprint clearance with the Department of Justice and the FBI.

Benefits for permanent employees who work 4 or more hours per day include medical, dental, vision and life insurance. Salary: The beginning salary is shown on each examination announcement. New employees start at the first step. Employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.

Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.

Sick Leave: One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.

Retirement: All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.

EXAMINATION PROCESS A review of the applicants experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the district will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part.

ELIGIBILITY LIST Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year.

CLASSIFICATION When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved.

FINGERPRINT REQUIREMENT California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees.

CERTIFICATE OF TUBERCULOSIS EXAMINATION New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test.

ACCOMMODATION In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants with disabilities may request that reasonable accommodation be given related to the actual examination process. Requests must be made at the time of application.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination and laboratory tests, which include a urinalysis. The urinalysis includes a drug screening. These tests must be given by a District-approved physician.

MANDATORY CHILD ABUSE REPORTING TRAINING (AB1432) As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reported Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter.

VETERANS PREFERENCE Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period.

REMEMINDER All current employees are reminded that in order to promote, an application must be filed during the filing period, tests must be taken, and passed. Permanent employees interested in a transfer must file a transfer request form.
