The Editorial Director, Journalism will lead content and strategy for EdSurge, part of ISTE+ASCD’s digital media platform. This role oversees a small team of education reporters, drives editorial direction, manages grant-funded journalism initiatives, and ensures high-quality, impactful storytelling across formats.
This is a highly visible leadership role requiring a creative, collaborative editor who thrives in a mission-driven environment and can operate across a complex organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive and oversee journalism strategy and integration across EdSurge and ISTE+ASCD platforms
- Review, approve, and assign story pitches across articles, podcasts, and newsletters
- Manage and mentor reporters, guiding story development and fostering a strong editorial culture
- Oversee editorial budgets and grant-funded initiatives; serve as a key partner to grantors and philanthropic stakeholders
- Stay current on publishing platforms and analytics tools (e.g., GA4) to improve workflows and expand reach
- Produce investigative and analytical journalism
- Maintain editorial standards, style guidelines, and journalistic integrity
- Develop innovative, multimedia storytelling approaches (video, podcast, digital/social)
- Lead cross-functional editorial initiatives and collaborate with marketing, technology, and events teams
Knowledge

Requirements
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in journalism, communications, or related field
- 6+ years of reporting and editing experience, including work within a journalism organization
- Experience leading content strategy and managing teams
- Background in multimedia content (video, podcast, digital/social)
- K–12 education coverage experience strongly preferred
