Summary

Under the direction of, and in collaboration with unit management, performs responsibilities exercising initiative, judgment and independent decision-making within the scope of the State Nurse Practice Act, hospital policy and other governing organizations. Utilizes the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) in a systematic approach to the direct and indirect care of patients and their families.


Job Duties

  • Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Medical, Surgical (inpatient/outpatient), Emergency, Senior Care, Nursery, Chemotherapy and Ambulance Transport as needed/delegated.
  • Maintains certifications in all areas within scope of practice Supervision of LPNs, Nursing Assistants and Health Unit Coordinators as needed.*
  • Demonstrates effective interviewing and assessment skills and integrates new or current techniques to obtain physical/psycho-social information from the patient/family to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care through the nursing process.*
  • Initiates and maintains patient care plan to reflect current patient needs utilizing computerized documentation*
  • Performs with minimal supervision, exercises good judgment to reduce errors. *
  • Demonstrates willingness to work extra shifts if needed. *
  • Demonstrates a willingness to train new staff.
  • Attends annual skills fair. *
  • Uses personal protective equipment that is appropriate for the given task. *
  • Reports accidents or incidents and safety hazards promptly. *
  • Cleans equipment, spills, etc. as necessary. *
  • Identifies needs, instructs others, and actively supports the role of patient advocate/liaison by communication and documentation of patient information to the proper resources/agencies. *
  • Proper computerized documentation will be maintained at all times. This includes, but not limited to admission, discharge, medication administration, teaching, activities of daily living and accurate intake/output. *
  • Identifies needs and concerns involving safety/risk management and quality improvement issues, participates in the research, action, and evaluation of proposed resolutions/interventions.

Required Education and Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Minnesota
  • At least 1 year of experience working in an Emergency Department is required.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check as required by the State of Minnesota

Certifications

  • Required at Hire:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Required Within 6 Months of Hire:
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Required Within 1 year of Hire:
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Additional Training

  • All newly hired RNs will receive in‑house trauma training within the first year of employment.
  • This training meets the educational objectives of the Minnesota State Trauma System, unless the RN has previously completed one of the following:
    • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
    • Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS)
    • Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN)
    • Certified Acute Trauma Nurse (CATN)
    • Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR)
