Storm Duty RequirementsTampa Electric and its sister companies provide critical services during emergencies. Team members must participate in response/recovery activities to maintain service to customers, work their normal duties or other assigned activities, and will be compensated accordingly. Responding to storms is a condition of employment.Position ConceptProvides engineering and operations support for substation protection and control, and offers relay settings consulting and guidance related to distribution substation protection.Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesConsult with Electric Delivery's System Security Department to establish protection requirements and operating philosophy and develop relay protection and control schemes consistent with TEC system requirements. (15%)Represent and coordinate Substation Engineering projects within Electric Delivery's Project Management process. (15%)Investigate and evaluate available protection and control devices, provide input for selection and purchase of materials, follow up on equipment delivery, ensure correct charging to projects, and check manufacturer drawings for accuracy. (15%)Provide engineering support to operating departments during checkouts, on‑call rotations, and as required; interpret engineering design during construction, obtain feedback for improvement. (15%)Develop all protection and control drawings for projects, including preliminaries, layout and installation drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, nameplate schedules, and cable schedules; prepare and submit work orders and associated paperwork; support crews during work; reconcile records and write operating and switching instructions. (40%)RelationshipsKey Internal: All Electric Delivery departments (Substation Operations, System Security, Project Management, Accounting, Purchasing, Planning, and Energy Supply). Key External: Maintain frequent contact with other utility and industry personnel, vendors, and participate in professional organizations such as IEEE PES PSRC & Substations Committee.SupervisionDirect: None.Indirect: May provide guidance, training, and consultation as relay engineering specialist to other P&C engineers.QualificationsRequired:Engineer I – Minimum 18 months experience or 12 months with an FE.Engineering Technologist I – Minimum 3.5 years experience.Engineer II – Minimum 4 years experience.Engineering Technologist II – Minimum 6 years experience.Senior Engineer – Minimum 8 years experience and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in Florida.Senior Engineering Technologist – Minimum 10 years experience.Principal Engineer – Minimum 12 years and must be a licensed Professional Engineer.EducationRequired: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program. *Engineering Technology Degree from an ABET accredited program is accepted.Licenses/CertificationsRequired: Eligible to obtain an FE in Florida and must obtain it within the first 2 years of employment.Preferred: Professional Engineering License in Florida.Related ExperienceRequired: Minimum of 2 years of experience in power system engineering and operations.Supervisory ExperienceRequired: None.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesRequired: Must have sound knowledge of or be able to learn protection and control systems, interpret substation and manufacturer drawings, and independently evaluate and modify system designs.Preferred: Ability to manage staff responsibilities, conduct, coordinate, and supervise complex engineering studies and reports, and assist in training and orientation.Work EnvironmentMost work is in an office, but field work at substations or the equipment yard may be required. Some overtime, weekend work, and one week rotational on‑call duties are required.
