Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Cardiovascular and Bariatric Services, the Echocardiogram Technician Registered is responsible for performing various non-invasive cardiovascular procedures and functions. The technician is expected to function in an expedient and professional manner and to display positive behavior when interacting with patients, family members, physicians and co-workers.

Responsibilities:

Performs echocardiograms as per departmental policy and procedure and in a professional manner:

  • Uses AIDET; introduces self, calls patient by name and makes comfortable with surroundings.
  • Competently performs echocardiograms, cardiac Doppler and color flow mapping per physician order for both outpatients and inpatients of all ages.
  • Utilizes sonicated contrast as directed and within the guidelines of the ACC and the ASE.
  • Assists with Transesophageal Echocardiograms per physician orders.
  • Performs stress echocardiograms in all modalities.
  • Performs and appropriately transmits pediatric echocardiograms.
  • Participates in call rotation to provide 24/7 coverage for echocardiography.
  • Completes appropriate documentation and charges associated with the services provided.
  • Communicates with physicians in a professional manner regarding patients’ test results/pertinent patient information.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Director; is able to fulfil role of Cardiovascular Tech when necessary.

Maintains appropriate Infection Control procedures:

  • Wipes machines down daily and between patients with appropriate disinfectant.
  • Appropriately cleans all lead wires on Stress/Echo machines.
  • Completes high level disinfection of TEE probes after each use, or arranges for appropriate disinfection of TEE probes by other qualified personnel.
  • Stocks all supplies/cleans and readies equipment necessary for the next day’s schedule.
  • Uses Standard Precautions with all patients.

Performs clerical and additional tasks as assigned:

  • Answers telephone in a courteous and professional manner; assists or directs caller to the appropriate person or service area.
  • Uses office equipment in a competent manner (fax, copier, printer) and is proficient in the necessary computer skills to fulfill responsibilities of daily workload.
  • Charges for EKGs; able to retrieve reports from Meditech for Echo, EEG and EKG services and communicate with physician’s offices via telephone/fax.
  • Completes preliminary echo report within the Merge, or other reporting, system.
  • Will participate in continuing education as required.

 Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Educational training in Non-invasive Cardiology areas; basic arrhythmia and advanced arrhythmia training preferred.

Experience

  • 2 years’ experience in the field of Cardiovascular Ultrasound and Non-invasive procedures.

Licenses, Registrations or Certifications

  • Must have one of the following certifications:
    • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) granted by ARDMS.
    • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) granted by CCI.
    • Registered Vascular Sonographer granted by ARDMS or CCI, with at least two (2) years of echo experience.
  • BLS required.
