Job Purpose

The Exceptional Children (EC) Teacher Assistant assigned to an Extended 1 classroom provides instructional, behavioral, personal care, and physical support to students with significant cognitive disabilities and extensive support needs. The assistant works under the direct supervision of the EC Teacher to help students access instruction aligned with the North Carolina Extended Content Standards, develop functional life skills, increase independence, and participate safely in school activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must meet North Carolina requirements for Teacher Assistants, including an Associate Degree or higher, or completion of at least 48 semester hours of accredited college coursework.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to lift, transfer, position, and assist students with mobility needs.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and Crisis Prevention/Intervention training preferred or willingness to obtain.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Support:

  • Assist the EC Teacher in implementing IEPs.
  • Support students during academic instruction using adapted curriculum and materials.
  • Reinforce skills aligned with the NC Extended Content Standards.
  • Collect and maintain student progress data.

Behavioral Support:

  • Implement positive behavior intervention plans.
  • Assist students in developing self-regulation and social skills.

Personal Care Assistance:

  • Assist with toileting, hygiene, feeding, dressing, and activities of daily living.
  • Follow health care plans and medical protocols.

Physical Assistance and Safety:

  • Assist students with mobility, positioning, lifting, and transferring.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and emergency protocols.

Classroom and Program Support:

  • Prepare instructional materials and classroom resources.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of students with significant cognitive disabilities; strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to follow instructions; ability to safely assist students.

Physical Requirements

Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting. Ability to assist students with mobility and personal care needs.

Working Environment

School-based Extended 1 classroom setting serving students with intensive educational and support needs.
