Description: The Department of Customer Services (CSD), Division of Motor Vehicles, is looking to fill seven (7) Driver License Examiner I positions located at various driver licensing centers on the island of Oahu. This position is responsible for administering written and visual acuity tests and conducting road performance tests to determine applicant eligibility for motor vehicle driver license categories 1 through 3.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
• Knowledge Testing & Eligibility: Determine applicant eligibility and administer written and oral driver license examinations, record results, and notify applicants of outcomes. • Vision & Physical Qualification: Conduct vision screenings and apply established standards to determine whether applicants are physically fit to operate a motor vehicle. • Road Test Administration: Inspect test vehicles, instruct applicants, observe driving performance, and make pass/fail determinations based on safety and regulatory criteria. • License Issuance & Verification: Issue driver licenses and permits by verifying identity, administering oaths, collecting fingerprints and fees, and validating out-of-state license eligibility.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
At time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Two (2) years of supervisory, driver training instructional, regulatory or related experience, including or supplemented by one (1) year of frequent public contact which involved explaining rules and regulations to others in determining their eligibility or non-eligibility for licenses, benefits or similar matters.
Must be able to:
• Safely operate various types of motor vehicles during road performance tests while identifying hazards, applying proper driving techniques, and using vehicle safety features • Evaluate applicant driving performance using established testing procedures and makes accurate pass/fail determinations, including acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations • Understand, apply, and explain applicable motor vehicle laws, ordinances, regulations, and traffic safety principles to ensure consistent and legally defensible licensing decisions • Communicate clearly and tactfully with the public by giving oral instructions, explaining test results, and maintaining control of the testing process and related records
LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license (Type 3), at the time of application. The required drivers license must be maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates must possess a good driving record, as evidenced by a certified traffic abstract with no moving violations within the past three (3) years, in order to be appointed to positions in this class; and must possess an appropriate valid driver license for at least three (3) years immediately preceding appointment.
