The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success, and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry, and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the rural populations of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties

The Division Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is responsible for leading the clinical programs related to the discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the School of Dental Medicine. The Division Director is also responsible for educating predoctoral dental students and advanced education residents (AEGD, GPR, and Pediatric Dentistry programs) in the discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. The Division Director is a faculty appointee in the Department of Surgical Sciences. The Department of Surgical Sciences also includes the disciplines of Endodontics, Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Periodontology, along with Emergency Dentistry.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Division Director reports directly to the Chair of Surgical Sciences. The Division and Department work in close collaboration with the other Departments (Foundational Sciences, General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, and Dentofacial Orthopedics) and with the Offices of Clinical Affairs, Dental Education and Informatics, Educational Support and Faculty Development, Extramural Clinical Practices, Student Affairs, and Research to support the school's educational programs, initiatives, and mission. In addition, the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Division works closely with other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University and other components of the University of North Carolina, as well as local/regional educational and clinical programs, including ECU Health Medical Center.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Division Director supports the development, implementation, and delivery of innovative curricula and instruction to dental students and residents at the School of Dental Medicine. The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Division Director actively participates in the delivery of patient care and the generation of new knowledge via research and scholarly activities. The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Division Director is committed to service and engagement at the local, State and/or national level.

Specific duties include:

• Provision of instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, general pathology, and pathophysiology to predoctoral dental students in didactic and clinical settings within a General Dentistry teaching model.
• Assessment of student achievement of competencies (knowledge, values, and skills) expected of the independent general dentist (graduate), including the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal and osseous disorders.
• Provision of instruction in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology to advanced education residents in interdisciplinary, didactic seminars and in the clinic.
• Provision of patient care services, including the evaluation and management of patients with clinical manifestations of oral and systemic diseases, in Ross Hall clinics, Faculty Practice, Hospital Dentistry, the Community Service Learning Centers, and ECU Health, including the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center.
• Participation in regular meetings of the Leo Jenkins Cancer Center's Head and Neck Cancer group.
• Participation in SoDM outreach and service activities, specifically related to awareness, education, prevention, and management of oral diseases.
• Overseeing, marketing, and managing the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology biopsy and teledentistry diagnostic services as components of the School's Faculty Practice and in full compliance with applicable governmental regulations (e.g., Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments or CLIA).
• Working closely with the Department Chair, Course Directors, and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics to develop, implement, and deliver novel curricula to include active learning strategies and information technologies.
• Assisting the Department Chair and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in continuous quality improvement and compliance efforts.
• Conducting basic and/or clinical research, and other scholarly activities that will help qualify the candidate for appropriate promotion.
• Service on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies, and within the School, University and/or ECU Health Medical Center.
• Preparation of accreditation and other program documentation as needed.
• Broad knowledge of dental education and commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.
• Attending meetings and representing the School in internal and external venues as requested by the Department Chair or the Dean.
• Performing other duties and assuming additional responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair or the Dean.
• A fixed-term or tenure track position is available at the title/rank of Assistant Professor or higher.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP), which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.

While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS.

Minimum Education/Experience

• DDS, DMD, or equivalent dental degree.
• Completion of an advanced education program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Current residents in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology programs accredited by CODA are eligible for consideration if they will complete their program by the intended start of employment.
• Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina.
• Eligibility for credentialing with ECU School of Dental Medicine and ECU Health Medical Center.
• Board certification or eligibility with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (at the time of employment).

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

• DDS, DMD, or equivalent dental degree.
• Eligibility for dental licensure in North Carolina (a NC dental license must be secured prior to the first day of employment)
