PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The role of the District Secondary Language Arts Specialist is to lead in the coordination and improvement of English Language Arts programs (6-12??) and assist in providing services to children at risk of dyslexia.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid certification as administrator or supervisor

Master's Degree

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)

Three years teaching experience required

Coordinate District functions

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Assist with the selection and utilization of basal language arts/reading textbooks, and related auxiliary materials.
  • Participate in the development and/or implementation of district-wide plans of action to improve the district language arts programs.
  • Plan and implement a systematic (6-12??) accountability and monitoring system for continuous improvement in language arts.
  • Plan and coordinate effective research-based staff development, integration of instructional technology, and acquisition of instructional materials for the district.
  • Coordinate the development, review, and update of curriculum documents in the area of language arts.
  • Work cooperatively with principals and teachers to ensure that effective teaching strategies for instructional improvement in the areas of language arts are utilized.
  • Work cooperatively with and members to ensure understanding and support for the district instructional program.
  • Keep informed about current trends and instructional practices in language arts, reading, and dyslexia by participating in local, state, and national professional organizations.
  • Attend local, state and national ELA, reading and dyslexia workshops and conferences for professional growth.
  • Meet with curriculum assistants, deans of instruction, and other campus staff to obtain and provide on issues related to language arts.
  • Collect, organize, and disseminate information among district personnel to promote effective instructional practices in the area of language arts.
  • Provide leadership in the development and/or implementation of plans of action for curriculum and new programs, program improvements, and program evaluations.
  • Keep current with educational developments and literature in the field of language arts, reading and dyslexia.
  • Assist the area directors in monitoring of district benchmark assessments.
  • Use current data derived by student assessments to plan and coordinate appropriate staff development and interventions.
  • Provide timely and effective oral and written communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
  • Coordinate the development, review, update, and implementation of curriculum documents in the area of language arts.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a training program for new dyslexia/reading language arts teachers.
  • Coordinate staff development for ELA teachers who serve dyslexic students.
  • Align district in-services and staff development activities to the needs of our students as per current assessment information in language arts/reading and dyslexia.
  • Monitor the progress of ELA/Reading and dyslexia programs.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others.
  • Performs other related duties assigned.
