Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation District 2 Bridge Crew in Northeast Iowa is looking to hire a Bridge Inspector 2 to lead the Bridge Crew. You will support your supervisor and team by assisting in various duties, answering questions about policy and procedures, distributing workload, checking work, supporting training efforts, and providing valuable input on personnel information.

Location: Maintenance Garage - Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from the assigned work location.

Shift: 7:00 to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. Hours may vary, and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergencies and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

As a Bridge Crew leader for the Northeast corner of Iowa, your duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Direct and coordinate the work of a specialized bridge crew to ensure the safety of the traveling public
• Oversee planning and scheduling, and provide leadership to equipment operators
• Perform materials sampling and testing
• Use and operate specialized highway and bridge maintenance, construction and materials equipment
• Adhere to construction and material procedures, techniques, terminology and specifications
• Perform operations related to snow and ice removal

Requirements:

• Must successfully complete a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards prior to appointment or within a period of time designated by the appointing authority.
• A CDL permit upon hire.
• Class A and endorsements/restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.

Entry-level driver Training is available upon hire through the Iowa DOT. The multifaceted training will help meet all state and federal regulations.

• A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil or construction engineering, the successful completion of the Fundamental of Engineering exam, as administered by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in bridge inspection*.

2) Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associates degree in civil or construction engineering technology, and experience equal to four years of full-time work in bridge inspection*.

3) Five years of full-time work experience in bridge inspection*.

4) Licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board. 5) Five years of bridge inspection experience which includes 18 months of full-time work in the state executive branch as a Bridge Inspector 1.

6) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes four years of full-time work in the maintenance or construction of highways and bridges.

• Successful completion of requirements set forth by National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). Experience in bridge inspection means: "Active participation in bridge inspections in accordance with the NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards), in either a field inspection, supervisory, or management role. A combination of bridge design, bridge maintenance, bridge construction, and bridge inspection experience, with the predominant amount (more than 50%) in bridge inspection, is acceptable."

Additional Qualification Requirements

• All positions in this class are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operators License.
• Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learners Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Drivers License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
• In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employers random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
• Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post-offer, pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
• Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
• Employees must respond to emergency situations as required, and may be required to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
