Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed power distribution design work using DDS to support utility distribution projects.
  • Create and update distribution design packages for overhead and underground systems, upgrades, relocations, and reconductoring (LTP work).
  • Utilize Crews, the utility's SAP-based work management system, to process and complete work orders accurately and on time.
  • Apply distribution design engineering principles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery solutions.
  • Conduct quality control and audit checks on distribution designs prior to submission to the utility client, verifying accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards.
  • Progress toward performing formal quality control reviews of other designers' work after gaining experience in the role.
  • Collaborate with internal utility energy division team members to support ongoing distribution and reliability initiatives.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of design decisions, work order details, and QC findings in DDS, Crews, and related systems.
  • Support continuous improvement of design and QC processes by identifying issues, proposing solutions, and sharing best practices.
  • Develop a strong understanding of utility client standards and requirements across multiple operating companies and apply them consistently in design work.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience using DDS specifically to support power distribution designs for FirstEnergy or any FirstEnergy operating company.
  • Hands-on experience in power distribution and distribution design engineering, including work on utility distribution systems.
  • Proficiency with DDS for creating and modifying distribution design packages.
  • Experience supporting FirstEnergy or its operating companies such as Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, Toledo Edison, Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power, West Penn Power, Jersey Central Power & Light, Mon Power, or Potomac Edison.
  • Ability to perform or actively contribute to quality control and audit reviews of distribution designs submitted to the utility client.
  • Strong understanding of electrical and engineering concepts related to power delivery and distribution.
  • Capability to work independently in a remote environment while managing multiple design and QC tasks.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in design work, documentation, and quality control checks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Crews, the utility's SAP-based system, for managing and completing work orders.
  • Background in civil, electrical, or utility-related engineering and consulting services such as construction services, site development, survey, storm water, transportation, or wastewater.
  • Familiarity with LTP work (upgrade, relocation, reconductors) and ESS4 or similar utility standards and processes.
  • Prior involvement in quality control, QC audits, or peer review of other designers' work for utility clients.
  • Interest in long-term career growth within a utility energy division that is experiencing significant expansion.
  • Motivation to pursue professional engineering development, including preparation for the FE exam and eventual PE licensure with organizational support.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with internal teams and utility client contacts.
  • Adaptability to support utility work across multiple regions and operating companies as the division expands.
