Pay is based on years of experience, with a RN position ranging from $29.08 to $34.09 per hour and a non‑RN position ranging from $26.99 to $31.27 per hour.

The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) position works within the SD-DOH's Division of Disease Prevention and Control (DPC) to provide comprehensive public health services in the area of infectious disease intervention and deliver education and technical assistance to clients, communities, and healthcare providers on disease transmission and prevention. The DIS works with a broad range of infectious diseases, including vaccine-preventable diseases, HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tuberculosis, zoonotic diseases, and other emerging infectious diseases and public health threats. Responsibilities include conducting case investigations, facilitating testing and treatment services, providing partner services, connecting clients to care and support resources, and assisting with outbreak response activities. This is a full-time position and will require occasional in-state and out-of-state travel.

Registered nurse with an associate or bachelor degree and at least 2 years of RN experience. Non-Nurses will be trained to perform phlebotomy (blood draws). Employee will intermittently conduct field visits to locate clients for notification, education, testing and/or treatment.

Licenses and Certifications:

To be considered for the Nursing Career Band, a current South Dakota RN license is required.

CPR, can be completed upon hire.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

The Department of Health is seeking a registered nurse with clinical experience and knowledge of public health is preferred or a non-nurse with a bachelors degree in health science, or a related field, and/or applicable experience.

Knowledge of:

  • conduct field services and testing;
  • conduct case analysis;
  • respond to outbreaks and assist with emergency preparedness activities.
