POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director contributes to the FOCUS URI Strategic Plan by providing leadership, expertise, and assessment of undergraduate advising within a mixed advising model that includes both professional and faculty advisors. In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the advising enterprise, the Director coordinates advising efforts with stakeholders across degree-granting colleges and key campus partners (e.g., Fannon Institute for Student Success, Enrollment Services, New Student Transitions, Disability, Access, and Inclusion) to ensure comprehensive support for students. As a key member of the university-wide advising leadership team (Advising Council), the Director leads short-term, cross-college initiatives focused on the development and implementation of advising strategies. The role also emphasizes the integration of best practices and current research in student retention and persistence to enhance advising effectiveness.
Duties and Responsibilities
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
related to the assessment of advising practices, student support and satisfaction, etc. Serve on NECHE committee when requested.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as assigned.
LICENSES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Computers, printers; database management and spreadsheet software; student record-keeping systems.
Required Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Earned master's degree.
Minimum of five years of experience serving in an undergraduate advising capacity in higher education.
Experience working with national best practices and research related to student success, academic advising, and retention.
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and other campus stakeholders.
Experience with advising technology/systems that support student success.
Supervisory skills.
Ability to interpret institutional policies, plans, rules, operations, and objectives and communicate the interpretation to others.
Ability to manage complex projects and systems.
Commitment to equitable advising practices.
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in written communication skills.
Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD or equivalent in higher education or related field.
Progressive experience in academic advising.
Conflict resolution skills.
Advisor training experience.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex academic environment with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of FERPA and ADA requirements.
