The Role

The Director of Total Rewards is a strategic and operational leader responsible for the design, execution, and continuous improvement of compensation, benefits, and payroll programs across a multi-unit, high-growth organization.

 

This role will drive an integrated, forward-looking approach to total rewards that supports the company’s growth, enhances team member experience and ensures competitive, cost-effective programs aligned with our values and business goals.  This role will lead the transformation of Total Rewards into a scalable, system-driven function, ensuring strong internal controls, automation, and compliance while delivering cost-effective and competitive programs that support employee attraction, retention, and performance.

Responsibilities:

 

What You’ll Own & Drive

Total Rewards Strategy & Executive Partnership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive Total Rewards strategy aligned with business growth, financial targets, and workforce needs
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on compensation, benefits, and payroll decisions
  • Translate business objectives into scalable, cost‑effective programs with clear governance and decision frameworks
  • Lead the evolution of Total Rewards from a transactional function into a forward‑looking, high‑impact discipline

Compensation Strategy & Programs

  • Design and govern competitive compensation programs that attract, retain, and motivate talent across corporate and practice environments
  • Own job architecture, market benchmarking, and pay structures, ensuring internal equity and external competitiveness
  • Lead incentive design and execution for:
    • Support Center roles
    • Practice leadership, providers, and clinical teams
    • Revenue‑driving and business development roles
  • Oversee annual compensation cycles, including merit, bonus, and equity programs
  • Act as a subject matter expert on pay transparency, compliance, and market trends
  • Ensure compliance with all wage and hour regulations (FLSA, minimum wage, etc.)

Benefits Strategy & Team Member Experience

  • Develop and execute a multi‑year benefits strategy balancing cost optimization, competitiveness, and scalability
  • Lead vendor strategy and annual renewals across medical, PBM, voluntary benefits, and stop‑loss programs
  • Oversee benefits administration end‑to‑end, including system configuration, vendor integrations, and compliance updates
  • Own administration and oversight of:
    • 401(k) plans and required audits and filings
    • COBRA, leave management, and benefits lifecycle processes
    • Wellness initiatives and employee engagement programs
  • Reimagine benefits communication, simplifying the experience and helping team members clearly understand and maximize their benefits
  • Use data, feedback, and insights to continuously improve program effectiveness and outcomes

Payroll Leadership & Compliance

  • Provide functional leadership over multi‑state payroll operations, including bi‑weekly, semi‑monthly, and off‑cycle payrolls
  • Establish strong internal controls, segregation of duties, and audit‑ready processes
  • Drive payroll accuracy, timeliness, and risk mitigation across jurisdictions
  • Partner with HRIS to ensure optimal system configuration and integrations
  • Lead process improvements that reduce manual work and errors

Compliance, Risk & Governance

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations (FLSA, ACA, ERISA, IRS, DOL)
  • Oversee required filings and reporting, including:
    • ACA (1094/1095)
    • W‑2s
    • 401(k) and welfare filings (5500)
    • EEOC and PCORI
  • Manage unemployment claims and documentation processes
  • Build repeatable compliance frameworks that scale with the organization

Systems, Automation & Process Excellence

  • Lead the Total Rewards systems roadmap, with a strong focus on HRIS optimization (UKG preferred)
  • Drive automation across payroll, benefits, and compensation workflows
  • Implement system‑based controls, approvals, and reporting
  • Partner with HRIS and data teams to improve data integrity and analytics
  • Document and standardize processes to ensure consistency and scalability

Multi‑Unit & Operational Support

  • Design programs that scale across a multi‑location environment
  • Balance centralized governance with operational flexibility
  • Provide guidance, tools, and training to Operations leaders and practice teams
  • Enable consistent execution while respecting local needs

Leadership & Team Development

  • Build, mentor, and lead a high‑performing team across compensation, benefits, and payroll
  • Establish clear roles, expectations, and accountability
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, ownership, and operational excellence

 

Qualifications:

Qualifications

 

  • 10–15+ years of progressive experience across Total Rewards, Compensation, Benefits, and Payroll
  • 5+ years leading multi‑functional teams
  • Experience in multi‑unit or multi‑location environments (healthcare, dental, retail, hospitality, etc.)
  • Proven success building and scaling Total Rewards functions in high‑growth settings
  • Strong experience implementing and optimizing HRIS platforms (UKG strongly preferred)
  • Track record of automation, vendor management, and cost optimization
  • Experience in private equity‑backed or high‑growth organizations strongly preferred
  • CCP, CEBS, or related certifications preferred

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Advanced degree or relevant certifications preferred
